Recap
An
unusually wild Tyler Pill limited the damage to just 2 runs over an efficient 7
innings Friday night, keeping the game close long enough for the 51s to tie
things up after his last out, and then win it with a walkoff. Las Vegas got
multiple hits from 4 players, and went 3-8 in scoring position (.375 is great),
but only managed 3 runs on 10 hits, stranding 11 runners on base. Jon Velasquez
and Scott Rice combined to keep Reno scoreless over the last two frames, which provided
the chance for Matt Reynolds to be a hero in the 9th. Reynolds
brought home the winning run with a shot that will go down as an RBI single,
but probably could’ve been a bases clearing extra base hit, as he smashed it to
CF.
Pill
came in with a 5.9 BB%, but walked 20% of batters faced in this start. Still,
he needed only 100 pitches for his 7 innings, with the HR he allowed being the
only major mistake. After 4 straight poor starts at home to start the season,
Pill has allowed just 3 ER over his last 2 home starts (13 IP, 10 H, 8 K: 9
BB). On the road, Pill has allowed 3 R or less in 4 of 6 starts, so perhaps there
is reason to believe he can be better moving forward.
The two most recent B-Mets on the team got the 51s first rally started with singles leading off the 7th, and they’d both come home to score in the inning – Boyd on a sac fly, and Rivera on an RBI single from Monell. Rivera was the spark for the 9th inning rally too, hitting a leadoff double to RF, which was his second double in as many days. After Vaughn walked, Tovar reached on a sac bunt attempt/single to load the bases for Reynolds. Reynolds would end the game with a drive to CF that was struck so well that the Reno center fielder just started running in.
