Post-game recap: Robert Whalen had one of his best starts of the season, pitching into the 8th inning for the first time since 4/25 (his second start of the year), and leading St. Lucie to an big win over Palm Beach. Whalen was in control early, retired the first 7 batters of the game, and then working around consecutive errors in the 3rd. Whalen would allow a walk in the 4th, but didn’t surrender a hit until there was one out in the 5th, when Carson Kelly (who else?) got the first Palm Beach rally started with a single. Whalen has only himself to blame for allowing Kelly to eventually come around to score, as he walked the next batter and then threw a wild pitch, which allowed both runners to move into scoring position with one out. Whalen would retire the final two batters of the frame on groundouts, but Kelly was able to cross the plate on the first one. St. Lucie had jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the 3rd, with a Champ Stuart walk sparking the rally. Stuart would steal 2B (his 15th stolen base of the year), advanced to 3B on a groundout, and then score on a single off the bat of All-Star Jeff McNeil. The real magic happened with two outs and the heart of the Mets order coming up: Oberste hit an RBI double, Smith singled him home, and Rosario flared a double into RF (although Smith couldn’t score on the play, and they’d both be stranded). After cutting it to 3-1 in the 5th, Palm Beach added another run in the 6th thanks to two singles and a stolen base – speed kills. St. Lucie had one more rally left in their bats, and it was a big one in the 8th. Smith led of with his third hit of the game before a Rosario walk. Sabol was up there to bunt, but a failed pickoff play allowed the runners to advance, but Sabol would groundout with no runner advance anyway. FSL All Star and HR-derby participant Colton Plaia followed with a booming double to CF, bringing home Smith and Rosario for a 5-2 lead. Champ Stuart followed with his third bomb of the year, a shot that announcer Adam MacDonald called, ‘a majestic homerun.’ Josh Smoker worked around a one-out walk from Whalen in the 8th, and some two out problems in the 9th, to hold on for the save.

Post-game recap: The Sand Gnats ended up on the wrong side of a tight battle with Hickory Saturday night, snapping their win streak at 10 games – Greenville also lost, so they’re still tied for first place. It was the first time Oswalt finished 7 innings this season, and just the first time he allowed less than a hit per inning, but the Savannah offense became very quiet at the wrong time. The Crawdads jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a two out rally in the 2nd – Carlos Arroy singled Luke Tendler to 3B, and then Rock Shoulders (true 80-name) doubled them both home. Johnson would help Savannah scratch right back for a run in the 3rd with a leadoff single. Johnson would steal 2B before Guillorme reached on a bunt single to advance him to 3B. The Gnats had their best scoring opportunity of the game, with runners on the corners, 0 outs, and the scorching hot Wuilmer Becerra at the plate, but Becerra hit a grounder to 2B that started a run scoring double play. In the 4th, a throwing error from the Hickory third baseman put runners on the corners for Lupo, and he’d bring home Mora with a sac fly to tie the game. The tie would last until the 6th, when Hickory’s Eduardo Pinto hit a one-out triple to the RF wall in the 6th, and then scored the eventual winning run on a single from the next batter. The last chance Savannah would have came in the 9th, when Eudor Garcia hit a pinch-hit single with one out, but pinch-runner Patrick Biondi was picked off before a threat could manifest, and the 9th fizzed out after that.

Minors MVP of the Day – Wilfredo Tovareyes? Tovar has reached base 9 times over the last two games, and he added two more stolen bases, setting a new high in stolen bases for a season already.

Minors Cy of the Day – As usual, there were several good options, but I want length and missed bats from my starters, and Robert Whalen offered the best combination of that, and he had to work around 4 St. Lucie errors.
