Post-game recap: The
Sand Gnats entered the day needing a win, or a Greenville loss, to finish the
first half as division champs, which comes with a guaranteed playoff spot.
After starting 8-16, they had charged into contention with a 30-15 run,
including 14-5 in June entering the day. As fate would have it, they found out
that they had clinched the title before the game, as Greenville finally lost
again, so you’d understand if they were a little distracted during the game. But
Casey Meisner didn’t let it distract him, and the Sand Gnats bats would wake up
enough in the 9th to hold off a late comeback run from the Green
Jackets. This might’ve been Meisner’s last start for Savannah, and he sure made
it a good one, reportedly sitting in the low 90’s with his heat, while showing
his nice curve and underrated changeup. The Gnats would jump out to a 3-0 lead
in the first two innings despite only 2 hits. Johnson and Gullorme led off the
game with walks, and then scored on a sac fly from Eudor and RBI hit from
Wuilmer. In the 2nd, Tuschak led off with a single, and then scored
on a bases loaded walk to Guillorme. Meisner would allow a leadoff single to
Dylan Davis in the 5th, and then Davis stole 2B and scored on two
straight groundouts. The Jackets would tack on another run in the 8th
on two walks and a hit, which made it a 3-2 game. And that’s when the Gnats
unleashed their speed, hitting a triple and stealing two bases in the 9th
as part of a 5-run frame. Moore led off with a triple, and then scored on a
throwing error from the catcher when Johnson (walk) took off for 2B. Guillorme
would add a stolen base in the frame, and then score on the first of two
straight doubles from Becerra and JC. The game looked in hand with a 6-run lead
and lefty Paul Paez coming in, but Paez struggled through the 9th,
allowing 3 runs on 4 hits in the frame. He nearly escaped the inning without
any damage allowed, but the Jackets would score all 3 runs on a two out triple
and RBI single. The crown is Savannah's fifth in six years, and you can read more here.

Post-game recap: The
Cyclones finished their opening series of the 2015 season with a win in the
rubber match against the Yankees. Neither team won at home this series, as they
always do a weird home/away/home series when these two teams play. Brooklyn got
a great start from 2014 undrafted free agent Michael Gibbons, who threw 7
scoreless innings in his pro debut for St. Lucie last week. Manager Tom Gamboa
had recommended Gibbons for the start, and has been talking him up all week,
suggesting he was the most dominant pitcher in Mets XST. Gibbons took a
one-hitter into the 6th inning, which is when he ran into trouble
for the first time as a pro. But the Cyclones had already scored 5 runs in the
game, so he had plenty of room to work with. In the 1st, a two out
walk to Vincent Siena sparked a two run rally. Michael Bernal would double him
home, and then come around to score on an E6 – they’d knock the pitcher out two
batters later. Bernal connected for his second extra base hit with one out in
the 3rd – a triple to the left-center field wall – and then scored
on a groundout from Zach Mathieu. The Yanks third error of the game helped
start Brooklyn’s rally in the 5th. Siena followed with a single, and
then Mathieu and Diehl picked up RBI singles with two outs. Gibbons would walk
the leadoff batter in the 6th, and that pitching sin led to a two
run frame for SI. Thairo Estrada doubled home the run two batters later, as
Gibbons edged near his pitch limit for the night. Considering Gibbons had
dominated the next batter due up in his first two AB’s (strikeout, popout), I
think Gamboa left him out there to end his night on a high note, and Gibbons
responded with his 6th strikeout. Nicco Blank would be the first out
of the bullpen, and he really struggled to find the zone, as I highlighted
above. Blank allowed the inherited runner to score on a double, and then walked
3 of the next 5 batters. Carlos Valdez came in to bail him out, but he’d allow
both inherited runners to score, which made it a 5-4 game. Jeff Diehl was quick
to get that run back in the 8th, launching the Cyclones first bomb
of the year to LF. Cyclones closer Alex Palsha did a great job finishing the
game, coming in for Valdez with a runner on in the 8th, and retiring
4 of 5 batters faced (there was a CS).

tonight? Down 2-0 with the bases loaded and 2 outs in the 9th, the
51s (not Backman, he had been ejected earlier) sent up Conrad for Tovar, and
Conrad came through with his second grand slam of the season. #YCPB
Minors Cy of the Day
– Two good choices, but Meisner was removed with less damage done against him,
so he gets the edge over Gibbons. Plus, this was hopefully the last SAL start
for Casey Meisner.
