Post-game recap

Pre-game notes: Logan Verrett allowed 1 ER or less in each of his first 9 appearances with Las Vegas, but allowed 4 ER over 4.2 IP in his last start; Verrett has a 14 K: 11 BB ratio in 22.1 IP coming in; Wilfredo Tovar is riding a 9-game hitting sreak - .361/.452/.500 slash over 42 PA with 7 SB – and has reached base 9 times over the last 2 games; Matt Reynolds has 5 multi-hit games in his last 9 starts, including a 4-hit game on 6/8; Johnny Monell is 15-36 with 4 doubles over his 10-game hitting streak; Brandon Allen is 5-10 in this series against Reno; after going 0-38, T.J. Dario Alvarez (4.87 ERA) – 0.1 IP, 1 IR – 0 S
John Mincone (W, 1-0, 0.00 ERA) – 1 IP, H, BB, 2 GO

Pre-game notes: Seth Lugo didn’t get much defensive help in his last start, and he ended up charged with 6 ER over 5 IP; Gavin Cecchini returned to the lineup for the nightcap Saturday after missing two games when he felt something in his torso during warmups; Michael Conforto hit his 9th homerun of the season between A+ and AA Saturday, and he has 40 XBH (27 2B, 1 3B, 12 HR) in his first 101 minor league games – 390 AB, or 1 XBH every 9.75 AB (1 XBH every 12.5 AB with Brooklyn, 1 XBH every 9.7 AB with St. Lucie, 1 XBH every 5.4 AB with Binghamton); Aderlin Rodriguez has seen nice gains in K% (from 20.3% in 2014 to 15.7% so far in 2015) and ISO (from .124 in 2014 to .193 so far in 2015) this year with Binghamton, but he still has a low 5.2 BB% and .252 BABIP – I don’t think he’s going to walk much more, but he’d having a breakout season if his BABIP was the .292 it was in 2014; L.J. Mazzilli only has 10 hits in his first 45 AB of 2015, but he has 5 doubles and a bomb.

Corey Lattrell @ Kevin McGowan (4-4, 4.89 ERA)
vs. Palm Beach (29-33) at 1:00 PM
Yesterday: W 7-3 (St. Lucie)
Today: W 5-2, McGowan (W, 5-3, 4.26 ERA) – 8 IP, 4 H, 2 R (0 ER), 4 SO, 12 GO: 5 FO
Lineup
3B – Jeff McNeil – 2-4, 2B (8), SB (9)
CF – Brandon Nimmo – 0-3, R, BB, SO
LF – Maikis De La Cruz – 0-3, R, BB, 2 SO
DH – Matt Oberste – 2-4, R, 2 SO
1B – Dominic Smith – 4-4, R, 2B (21), 2 RBI (36)
SS – Amed Rosario – 0-4, RBI (15)
RF – Victor Cruzado – 1-3, 2B (7), RBI (4), BB, GIDP
2B – Phillip Evans – 0-4, 2 SO
C – Jeff Glenn – 1-4, R, HR (1), RBI (5), SO, GIDP
Bullpen:
Akeel Morris (S, 13, 1.69 ERA) – 1 IP, H, 2 SO, 1 FO

Post-game recap: While Brandon Nimmo being activated to begin his ‘rehab’ with St. Lucie was the big story coming in, Kevin McGowan and Dominic Smith stole the show with huge performances for the Mets. McGowan had one of his best starts in the minors, needed less than 100 pitches to finish 8 innings, with only 2 unearned runs allowed on 4 hits. The Mets jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 2nd, with leadoff singles from Oberste and Smith sparking the rally, and a groundout from Rosario providing the RBI. Two singles and an E7 led to two unearned runs for Palm Beach in the 3rd, as they’d jump out to a 2-1 lead. That lead would hold until the 6th, when Dom Smith doubled home Nimmo and De La Cruz, who had both walked to start the inning. Jeff Glenn added an insurance run in the 7th when he led off with his first bomb of the year. After allowing a leadoff single in the 4th, McGowan had retired 12 straight before Derek Gibson doubled to start the 8th. McGowan worked around the double to finish his outing strong, picking up his 4th strikeout and two more groundouts. Victor Cruzado doubled home Smith in the 8th to give St. Lucie a 5-2 lead, and that was more than enough for Akeel Morris, who normally only needs a one run lead. Morris would end the game with a strikeout on a 3-2 fastball that got the corner.

Pre-game notes: A 3-4 night from Dominic Smith has him up to a .284/.322/.418 slash through 50 games, which is a huge improvement over the .143/.194/.159 slash he has after 17 games – 21 of his 22 extra base hits have come since; because they want some hometown representation (and Michael Conforto is in AA, while Dominic Smith didn’t get a reserve spot), Colton Plaia will participate in the FSL HR Derby during the All Star festivities, although there was some initial hesitation on his part (per radio announcer Adam MacDonald); Plaia has 2 homeruns this year, after 4 with Savannah last year, but 25 doubles in his 506 minor league AB’s.

Ricky Knapp (1-0, 2.08 ERA) @ Ariel Jurado (8-0, 2.09 ERA)
@Hickory (39-22) at 5:00 PM
Yesterday: L 3-2 (Savannah, Hickory)
Today: L 8-1, Knapp (1.69 ERA) – 5 IP, 3 H, 4 SO, HBP, 3 GO: 5 FO
Lineup
2B – Jonathan Johnson – 0-4, 2 SO
SS – Luis Guillorme – 0-4
RF – Wuilmer Becerra – 1-4
3B – Eudor Garcia – 0-4, 3 SO
1B – Jon Leroux – 0-3
DH – Vicente Lupo – 2-4, R, 2 SO
LF – Joe Tuschak – 1-4
C – Adrian Abreu – 2-4, RBI (2), SO
CF – Patrick Biondi – 1-3, 3B (2), SO
Bullpen:
Darwin Frias (L, 0-1, 8.80 ERA) – 2.1 IP, 4 H, 6 R (5 ER), 3 BB, 2 SO, HR, 2 GO: 3 FO
Ben Griset (2.93 ERA) – 0.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 FO, 2 IR – 2 S

Post-game recap: A tightly fought battle turned in a laugher for the home team Sunday evening in Hickory, but the Gnats are still tied with Greenville for first place. Ricky Knapp was great for Savannah over his 5 innings, as he’s done many times this year for the Gnats. He allowed a pair of singles to the first two Hickory batters of the game, but would allow only two more base runners after that, stranding all 4. Savannah had 0 chances to score over the first 5 innings, but then Patrick Biondi led off the 6th with his second triple of the year. Biondi would try to score on a Guillorme groundout, but the first baseman, Rock Shoulders, threw him out at home. Unfortunately, Darwin Frias could not replicate Knapp’s success from the pen, and Hickory used the momentum swing to their advantage with the first runs of the game in the bottom of the 6th. Two batters after a leadoff walk, Jose Trevino launched a 2R blast to LF. After the first two Gnats were retired in the 7th, Lupo (CF), Tuschak (RF), and Abreu (LF) sprayed singles into the OF for a run to cut the lead in half. But Hickory was like a different team against Frias, and they’d come out and load the bases on 3 straight singles in the bottom of the 7th. Frias would strike out the next batter, and then Josh Morgan followed with a groundout to SS, but Johnson threw the relay to 1B away, allowing 2 runs to score. Hickory would add 4 more in the 8th, putting this game out of hand.

Pre-game notes: The Mets and Sand Gnats lost Brad Wieck to the Padres Saturday afternoon, which was a disappointing loss after he had emerged as an interesting lefty this year; Ricky Knapp will take his spot in the rotation Sunday after piggy-backing the past few weeks; Knapp has been good in 4-5 inning stretches this year, but he was marked for 2 ER on 3 H in just 1.2 IP during his last appearance; SAL All Star Jonathan Johnson is on fire, with a 9-game hit streak that’s pushed his slash to an impressive .340/.440/.478, with 10 2B, 3 3B, and 2 HR this year; Wuilmer Becerra had a .739 OPS in 67 AB during April (7 XBH, 16 K: 4 BB), a .793 OPS in 100 AB during May (11 XBH, 23 K: 6 BB), and is up to a 1.133 OPS in his first 44 AB of June (9 XBH, 10 K: 4 BB); Luis Guillorme is 8-21 during a 5-game hitting streak.

Minors MVP of the Day – Dominic Smith has been on a tear over the past month - up to .375/.403/.578, with 20 doubles, 2 homeruns and a 16.4 K%: 4.5 BB% since May 12 - and has a chance to surpass a .300 batting average with a another big game Monday, which is his 20th birthday.

Minors Cy of the Day – Kevin McGowan has a very solid for St. Lucie, and this was his best start yet. It's not as good as the run he had before his promotion last year, but he still has a 2.55 ERA over his last 6 starts, and he's been very effective in 10 of 12 starts - he allowed 8 ER in his second start, and 5 ER after 5.2 scoreless on 5/9.
