Recap

Luis Cessa has been pitching on a different level lately, and he continued that Wednesday night in Portland to lead Binghamton to a win. Cessa went 8 strong innings, allowing one run in the 3rd inning, and then not really facing a serious threat for the rest of the start. Michael Conforto, who continues to rake in the Eastern League since his promotion, led the B-Mets offense with 3 hits. After 8 great innings from Cessa, Paul Sewald came in and set down the Sea Dogs in order for his 11th save of the year.
Cessa was very strong throughout, and seemed to only get better throughout the start. He only work 2 clean innings, but also only allowed more than one base runner in the 3rd inning. The first two Portland batters would reach in that 3rd inning (both on singles grounded through the infield), putting runners with 0 outs for Carlos Asuaje. He’d hit a grounder to Brock Peterson that had the potential to be a double play, but Cecchini’s throw sailed high for an error. Over his last 4 starts, Cessa has allowed 2 ER over 27.2 IP, with 15 hits and 4 walks allowed against 20 strikeouts.
Check out details and highlights from the offense below. The series wraps up Thursday night at 6:00 PM, with Michael Fulmer scheduled to pitch for Binghamton.

Bonus

Gavin Cecchini made his 16th error of the season in the 3rd, airmailing a return throw on a potential double play – no excuse, but notice how late the runner ducks.

L.J. Mazzilli made a few nice plays at 2B in the game.

Scoring Highlights

L.J. Mazzilli got the 1st inning rally started with a double off the monster in LF – the Sea Dogs press box has a ball tracker that estimated the double went 344 feet. Conforto followed with a single lined into CF, but Mazz got a poor read on the hit and had to hold up at 3B. Brock Peterson followed with an RBI double to LF, but Conforto could only advance to 3B on the play. However, the B-Mets would catch a break when Quevedo unleashed a wild pitch that got far enough away for Conforto to score.

After Mazz walked to lead off the 3rd, Conforto doubled him home from 1B to make it a 3-0 game.

Conforto added his third hit of the game with two outs in the 7th.
