Recap
Binghamton
ended up on the right side of a tight pitcher’s duel in the nightcap against
New Britain Saturday. After completing Friday’s rain-suspended affair (a 7-2
win for Binghamton), the B-Mets sent Robert Gsellman to the mound for a
7-inning affair, and he provided them with his best AA effort to date. The
G-Man wasn’t without his flaws, allowing base runners in 4 of 6 frames, and
having to work out of a one-out, bases loaded situation in the 2nd –
he’d strike out the first batter before a soft lineout to Mazzilli ended the
threat. Michael Conforto provided the B-Mets with their first run when he
launched a two-out blast to right-center field in the 1st inning
(see below), then Aderlin Rodriguez would double and score on a bases loaded
walk in the 2nd, and that was the sum of the Binghamton offense. The
Cats finally broke through for a run off of Gsellman with two outs in the 6th
when Juan Ciriaco lined a single into CF. The base runner had advanced to 2B
only a few pitches earlier on a pitch in the dirt. With the game close heading
to the final inning, Pedro Lopez opted to bring in his closer Paul Sewald for
the save, and Sewald would rebound from consecutive singles to start the frame
by retiring the next three in a row.
This
series wraps up Sunday afternoon at 1 PM, with Seth Lugo looking to lead the
B-Mets to a sweep over first place New Britain – they could move to within 3
games of first place, although both Trenton and Reading stand between
Binghamton and New Britain.
Michael
Conforto hit this solo blast with two outs in the 1st inning.
Aderlin
Rodriguez led off the 2nd with a double to RF, and then scored on a
bases loaded walk to Robert Gsellman.
