Post-game recap: The
Gnats come into this weekend in control of their destiny with respect to the
first half division title, which clinches a spot in the postseason. They’re
tied with Greenville, and have a 7-0 record against the Drive this year, so
even if they finish tied, Savannah should have the advantage. They jumped out
to a 2-0 lead in the second when Lupo double home Nido (walk) and JC (single) –
it was only Nido’s seventh walk of the season. They’d extend the lead to 5-0
with a run in each of the next 3 innings. In the 3rd, Guillorme led
off with an infield single, and then came around to score on consecutive
singles fro Becerra and Eudor. Abreu stroked a two out double into RF in the 4th
inning, and then Guillorme singled him in two batters later. Eudor led off the
5th with a blast to RF, and got some positive
reviews for his hitting from a BP contributor (among other things) in
attendance – he’s doubled his 2014 HR total in 50 fewer PA, although his K and
BB rates have gone the wrong direction so far. Meanwhile, Oswalt worked around
a leadoff error from Guillorme in the 1st – despite the error, he
got a positive
review too – and then didn’t allow more than one base runner in an inning
until the 7th. Andrew Cain struck for the first Augusta run leading
off the 5th when he launched a blast to LF. Oswalt retired the first
batter, but the next three would reach on a double, E5, and a single to RF, so
Villasmil was brought into a bases loaded situation. He’d respond by inducing
an inning ending double play, but then couldn’t replicate that success in the 8th.
He’d allow a run on two hits in the frame before being replaced by Baldonado
with a runner on 1B (who would score). Baldonado allowed 3 straight singles to
load the bases, so manager Jose Leger went to the BOOM, as it was already known
that the Drive had won. For the second straight inning a Sand Gnats pitcher
came into a bases loaded situation, and for a second straight inning that
pitcher worked out of it. Roseboom allowed a walk in the 9th, but
kept things scoreless, as he has now done in 21 of 23 appearances this year.

Minors MVP of the Day
– As if you had any doubts, Kirk Nieuwenhuis can crush PCL pitching. He got hot
for the Mets down the stretch in 2014 after spending some time with the 51s
mid-season, so perhaps the same magic can be caught this year.
Minors Cy of the Day
– Tyler Badamo was very good in the opener for Brooklyn, retiring 12 straight
between the two hits he allowed.
