Pill is coming off his best home start of the year, when he allowed only 1 run
on 4 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings, picking up 4 strikeouts; Pill has a huge
home/road split so far, with a 9.51 ERA/1.040 OPS allowed at home, but a much
better 4.33 ERA/.667 OPS allowed on the road; Pill’s only 3-11 at the plate so far, with 0 XBH, so he’s got some work to
catch up to ‘slugger’ Darin Gorski (6-12, 4 2B); after only 4 hits in his first
7 games with Las Vegas, Jayce Boyd has 4 hits in his last 4 games, including
his first PCL double and RBI; Castellanos had a long 0-fer, but is 7-18 over
the past week, with 3 doubles and a bomb; Matt Reynolds has a hit in 9 of 10
games during June, with 5 doubles and a bomb, for a slash of .375/.422/.575 in
45 PA; T.J. Rivera entered yesterday’s game riding an 0-38, but he busted out
with a 3-hit game; Travis Taijeron has a .161 BABIP over his last 56 PA, but 5
of his 8 hits have gone for extra bases (2 doubles, 3 homeruns), and he’s
managed 11 K: 11 BB during that span (a big improvement in the strikeout
department, just huge BB numbers), so he’s still hitting a solid .771 OPS (107
wRC+); Wilfredo Tovar is 17-21 on stolen base attempts in 47 games, matching
his career high from rookie ball in 2009, when he went 17-26 in 50 games; Tovar

Cecchini was scratched during warmup’s yesterday, although that was just
precautionary; Michael Fulmer had his worst performance to date in his last
start for Binghamton, allowing 7 R (6 ER) on 7 hits in 5.1 IP, which nearly
doubled his ER total with Binghamton; Fulmer struck out a season low of 2
batters in his last start, dropping his K% to 15.3%, and after picking up 9 K’s
in his only start with St. Lucie, Fulmer’s AA high is 5; Michael Conforto has
reached base in all 11 games with Binghamton, and he has a 1.169 OPS in his
first 48 AA PA (!); after 4 hits and 2 walks combined over the first two days
of June, Jared King is 2 for his last 23 with 2 walks since; Eudy Pina has a
single in 4 straight game, but a strikeout in 11 straight. UPDATE: Chase Huchingson has been promoted to Las Vegas, and Julian Hilario has been added back into the B-Mets bullpen.

Post-game recap: Logan
Taylor continued his strong run with St. Lucie, going 6+ with 1 ER or less for
the third straight start – 19.2 IP, 0.92 ERA, 15 H, 9 K: 8 BB – but it wasn’t
enough on a night when the bats went cold. St. Lucie finished 1-8 with RISP,
with the only hit coming for their only run in the 1st inning. Cruzado
hit a one-out double into the right-center field gap, and then scored two
batters later on an RBI single from Oberste. After that, the Mets only had 2
runners reach in the same inning twice. Their best chance came in the 6th,
with the first two reaching and the 2-3-4 batters due up, but they’d be retired
in order, with no noise made. Taylor’s recent control issues hurt him in both
innings he allowed a run. With one out in the 4th, he hit Derek
Gibson with a pitch, and then threw a wild pitch to the next batter – Gibson
would score on a two out double from Carson Kelly, a batter who has killed the
Mets this year. In the 5th, it was a leadoff walk that came back to
burn him, although the runner would come home on a passed ball. The bullpen
continued their fine work over the final 2+ innings, but the offense couldn’t
capitalize when they got two on with one out in the 9th.
Pre-game notes: Jeff
McNeil left in the 1st inning of the first game yesterday, and then
did not return; Logan Taylor is coming off his best two starts in the FSL,
allowed 3 R (1 ER), on 9 hits and 6 walks in 13 IP, with only 5 strikeouts but
only a .506 OPS allowed; Victor Cruzado is only 4-17 since coming off the DL,
but that’s a single in 4 of 5 games after missing a month, and it’s just nice
to have him back in the lineup; Stefan Sabol has reached base in all 11 games
in St. Lucie, including 9 games with a hit, and 4 multi-hit games – .325/.400/.500
in his first 45 PA with St Lucie; in the 29 games since May 12th,
Dominic Smith hasn’t gone more than two games without a double, and he’s only
gone two games without a double 4 times (he has 19 doubles during that span).

Post-game recap: The
Sand Gnats won their 10th straight game, coming out on top after a
back-and-forth game in the opener against Hickory. Reyes did not have his best
stuff, allowing two runs in the 1st inning on 3 walks, an RBI
single, and an RBI groundout – he walked the first two batters of the game.
Savannah charged right back to tie the game, with John Mora extending his
triple to 7 games on his 7th triple of the year, scoring Leroux from
1B. Mora would come home two batters later Nido’s only hit of the night.
Johnson’s big night continued in the 3rd with a leadoff triple, and Guillorme
singled him home for a 3-2 lead. That lead would not last long, with Jose
Trevino launching his 8th homerun off of Reyes with one out in the
bottom of the 3rd. But Savannah jumped ahead again in the 5th,
with a Wuilmer Becerra walk sparking the run, which is always nice to see.
Becerra would advance to 2B on a passed ball and score on Leroux’s second hit
of the game. This lead lasted a little longer, but then Tripp Martin hit a 2R
bomb with two outs in the 6th, right after Reyes walked his fourth
batter of the game. But Savannah still wouldn’t quit, taking the lead back
within 3 batters in the 7th inning, thanks to a pair of homeruns
from Johnson and Becerra - Johnson turned on a 97 MPH heater for his bomb, and Becerra turned on a 96 MPH heater. Paul Paez came in for the 7th and pitched
two strong innings, picking off the only batter to reach. He yielded to the
Duff-man in the 9th, and James Duff picked up save #5 with a perfect
frame. Johnson finished a double shy of the cycle, and he knew about it going into that last AB. He's having a great season, earning that SAL All-Star nod, and hopefully a promo to the 2B spot that should open in St. Lucie during the second half when Jeff McNeil is promoted.

Reyes is the reigning SAL
Pitcher of the Week for his 7 shutout innings against Greenville on the 5th;
Savannah has won 9 in a row and are in a tie for 1st place with
Greenville (who they swept during this streak); Jon Leroux has a hit in 11 of
12 games - .340/.353/.480 with a double and 2 bombs – including a game tying HR
in last night’s game, and a walk off homerun right before this streak started;
good thing Vicente Lupo’s demotion to Brookyln was only a roster move things,
as he’s been much improved lately: he has a hit in 5 of 6 games, with 3
multi-hit games during that span and only 4 K in 22 PA (a huge improvement for
him), and his average is up to .207, with the OBP (.299) nearly back on the
right side of .300; John Mora has a 6-game hitting streak – .435/.462/.739 with
3 doubles and 2 triples – and hits in 8 of his last 9 games; Tomas Nido has 6
hits during a modest 4-game hitting streak, but included are a double, triple
and homerun; Nido has 6 XBH total over his last 11 games (3 2B, 3B, 2 HR = .269 ISO over 45 PA).
Minors MVP of the Day
– Jonathan Johnson came up a double shy of the cycle, plus a stolen base, and he's up to a .333/.430/.474 slash for the season.

– Michael Fulmer was having his best start of the year for Binghamton when Mother Nature intervened with a lot of rain and lightning, suspending the game in the bottom of the fourth. There were some other good starts in the system, but Fulmer was awesome.
