Recap
Matt
Bowman was rolling along with arguably his best start of the year Friday in
Fresno, but then he ran into a wall in the 8th inning as he neared
100 pitches. Fortunately the 51s offense was in peak form in this one, and they
had built up a huge lead by the time Bowman started to struggle at the end.
Chase Huchingson came in to bail Bowman out of the 8th, and while he
wouldn’t strand the inherited runners, the 51s lefty Chase was able to finish
the game out.
Bowman
has absolutely had a poor season to this point, getting smacked around by
lefties (1.134 OPS allowed), and striking out less than 10% of batters faced.
But he’s now shown improved results over his past 2 starts (well, before the 8th
inning in this one), as he threw 6 shutout innings last Saturday against Reno
(but he had 0 strikeouts). He did feature one of his better curves in this
start, but it was inconsistent throughout the start. Also, he reportedly hit 94
MPH with his fastball, although the stadium gun could’ve been hot. He fell
behind 1-0 in the 2nd when Nolan Fontana doubled home a run with two
outs. It could’ve been worse in the inning, but Alex Presley lined a rope to
Muno that started a double play after a leadoff single. After that, Bowman
would allow only a walk through the 7th, when Singleton broke up his
streak with a single. He’d keep Fresno off the board in that frame, but he had
clearly been tiring as he entered the 8th, and his strike % supports
that – 69.5% strikes through the 5th, 47.4% after. Bowman retired
the first batter in the frame, but would allow the next 3 to reach before being
replaced.
Things
did not start well for Chase, as he allowed an RBI single to Singleton, and
then unleashed a wild pitch for another run (a third run would score on a
groundout), before bouncing back to finish the frame with a strikeout. Thing
went much better for Chase in the 9th, as he set the Grizzlies down
in order.
The
series continues Saturday at 10:05 PM, with Darin Gorski scheduled to pitch for
Las Vegas.
Scoring Highlights
Kirk
Nieuwenhuis hit a 3R-HR in both the 4th and 5th innings,
putting the 51s up 6-1.
Danny
Muno and Matt Reynolds hit consecutive singles leading off the 7th,
and then Johnny Monell hit the 51s third 3R-HR of the game.
Travis Taijeron led off the 8th with a double, and then scored on a single from Muno. Monell would add to his big night with an RBI double to CF.
Bonus
As this is a Mets-based blog, my
GIF’s are generally positive things to happen for the minor leaguers, but Tony
Kemp was ridiculous in CF in this game.
