Recap
The
Las Vegas ace was not at his sharpest Thursday night, and Reno took advantage
for 4 runs in the 3rd, but the 51s kept battling back in this PCL
classic, and turned it into a laugher by the end. It was the first time Matz
fail to go 5 innings in an appearance this year, and the fifth time in 12 starts
that he allowed 3+ walks. Wilfredo Tovar was a beast from the leadoff spot,
reaching base 5 times, and generally just being a nuisance for Reno to deal
with. Cody Satterwhite proved to be past any early season struggles/PCL
adjustments he had to make with 2 more great innings, giving the 51s bats a
chance to catch up. Chase Bradford worked a quick 7th inning
(striking out Danny Worth and Nick Evans), but he’d allow two runs on two
doubles in the 8th, allowing the Aces to re-take the lead. After the
51s stormed back with a vengeance in the bottom of the 8th, John
Church came in to finish off a much-needed win for Las Vegas.
As
Russ Langer said at the start of the 4th inning, Matz had a nice 1st
inning, a solid 2nd inning, but then everything fell apart for him
in the 3rd – to finish the thought, he was at his best in the 4th
(see below for full details). He was throwing more changeup than he has
recently, and that was really working for him in the first two innings, but he
only threw 3 of 7 changeups for strikes in the 3rd – he also only
threw 1 of 4 curveballs for strikes, so you can tell what the problem was that
frame. After walking his second batter of the frame, Matz went almost
exclusively with the fastball over his final 6 batters, retiring the final 4 in
a row.
Tovar
got the 51s scoring when he manufactured a run leading off the 1st
inning: he drew a walk, stole 2B, went to 3B on a groundout for out #1, and
then scored on a single. Castellanos got their first comeback rally started
with a double leading off the 4th, scoring on a two out single from
T.J. Rivera. Matt Reynolds, Johnny Monell, and Brooks Conrad hit consecutive
singles for a run leading off the 3rd, and then Monell scored on a
sac fly to tie the game. Las Vegas took the lead back in the 6th,
sparked by a leadoff double from Rivera. Rivera would score on an RBI single
from Tovar, and the 51s were in a good position for more in the frame, but
they’d strand the bases loaded.
The
Aces jumped out against Bradford in the 8th, with a Jamie Romak
double getting things started, and the bases ending up loaded before an out was
recorded. Nick Buss would drive in 2 runs with a double to give Reno the lead
back, but Bradford bounced back to strand the bases loaded in the frame.
Another
leadoff Tovar walk ignited the most important rally of the game in the 8th,
as Las Vegas would jump out to a commanding 11-6 lead. Reynolds singled Tovar
to 3B, and then Wilfredo scored on a wild pitch. Kevin Munson would then walk
the bases loaded, before walking in 2 runs. After Tim Crabbe replaced Munson,
Rivera put an exclamation point on his night with another RBI hit. Not to be
outdone, Tovar followed with another RBI hit of his own two batters later.
Church
worked around a double to protect the big lead in the 9th. This
series continues Friday night at 10 PM, with Tyler Pill scheduled to pitch for
Las Vegas.
