Recap
The
51s and Bees exchanged leads twice in the 6th inning, with Las Vegas
coming out on top, and with just enough of a lead to hold on in the opener of
this 3-game series. Darin Gorski came out very strong for Las Vegas, retiring
the first 8 and 15 of the first 17, but ran into trouble in that exciting 6th
inning. Meanwhile, the 51s had built up a 2-run lead, and weren’t about to let
Salt Lake stay ahead for very long after they finally got to Gorski. Scott Rice
ran into trouble in the 9th, and then Jon Velasquez couldn’t get the
final strike against two straight batters, but he’d induce a groundout to 1B
from Alex Yarbrough to end the game.
Alex
Castellanos became the first base runner of the game for either side when he
led off the bottom of the 2nd with a single – he’d advanced to 2B on
an E6 throwing error. The next three 51s batters would groundout, but that was
good enough to get Castellanos home for the games first run. In the 4th,
Conrad kept the inning going with a two out single, and then came around to
score on an RBI double from Brandon Allen.
The
Bees Kaleb Cowart led off the 6th with a long blast to right center
off of Gorski, ending the shutout on the fifth pitch of the inning. Gary Brown
followed with a single, and he’d score on the first of consecutive doubles.
Overally, Gorski was very solid as a starter, but his mistakes were mostly
punished for extra bases.
Castellanos
sparked the 51s counter-rally in the bottom of the 6th with a one
out double to LF. He’d score two batters later when Allen hit his second double
of the game (400+ feet to dead center). After Taijeron walked on 5 pitches, the
Bees pitching coach came out for a visit, and Edgar Ibarra predictably started
the next AB with a fastball. The pitch was pretty much right down the middle,
and Boyd clobbered it for a 2R double to CF.
Chase
Huchingson was the first out of the pen for Las Vegas, and he was great,
working a quick 1-2-3 inning that ended with a strikeout. Zack Thornton took
over for the 8th, and he had to work around a fielding error by T.J.
Rivera (who entered for Muno in the 7th), but kept Salt Lake off the
scoreboard.
The
51s added an insurance run in the bottom of the 8th thanks to three
straight singles from Conrad, Allen, and Taijeron.
Scott
Rice took over in the 9th and allowed a one out walk, but was
removed with two outs and a switch-hitter coming up. Velasquez got ahead 1-2 on
Cowart, but Kaleb would eventually hit a 3-2 single into RF for an RBI. He’d
get ahead of Gary Brown 1-2 as well, but Brown kept the inning alive with a
single into LF. But the game would finally end when the next batter hit a
groundout to Conrad.
The series continues Tuesday night at 10:05 PM, with Rainy Lara scheduled to make the start according to the Las Vegas game notes.
