Recap
The
Sand Gnats won game one of their double-header in Lexington Thursday evening
behind a great start from Scarlyn Reyes, and a multi-run blast from both Tomas
Nido and Eudor Garcia. Reyes was control throughout the first 6 innings,
allowing only a run after a misread double in the 2nd inning, and a
leadoff blast in the 6th. Savannah would jump ahead with a big 4th
inning, and then they added some important insurance runs over the next two
frames. Reyes would have to leave with two outs and two runs already in during
the 7th inning, but he hadn’t been hit hard in the inning, and
would’ve finished the frame (and consequently the game) if not for an E3 with
two outs. Cameron Griffin came in for Reyes and quickly got the final out on a
groundout.
Reyes
was sharp in this start, sitting in the low 90’s with his fastball, and mixing
in his secondary pitches throughout the start. He allowed a pair of loud outs –
a double to the RF wall in the 2nd, and the homerun in the 6th
– but also several singles that were grounded through the infield. He struck
out the first two batters of the game, so it looked like this might be one of
those nights for him, but then he’d add only two more strikeouts throughout the
start. Check out his pitch log from this game below, with several GIFs added,
including a few defensive plays.
These
two teams would play another game after this Thursday night, with Micheal
Gibbons starting for Savannah in the nightcap.
Scoring Highlights
The
Sand Gnats took advantage of this game in the 4th, and Jonathan
Johnson got things started in the frame with a leadoff walk. Luis Guillorme
followed with a perfectly placed bunt hit, which advanced Johnson to 3B (he
stole 2B). Eudor Garcia knocked home Johnson with a single two batters later,
and then Tomas Nido hit an absolute bomb to RF.
They
scored a run in the 5th without picking up a hit: Patrick Biondi
drew a one out walk, advanced to 2B on a wild pitch, stole 3B, and then scored
on an RBI groundout from Johnson.
Eudor
Garcia provided some insurance with a two run blast to RF in the 6th,
knocking home Michael Katz, who had led off the inning with a walk
