Recap
The
Mets surprised many by announcing the release of Alex Castellanos Thursday
afternoon, with word that Castellanos would be heading to Japan to continue his
career. In his place the Mets have signed Zach Lutz, the Mets 5th
round pick from 2007, who has a .642 OPS in 31 AB’s in the majors, and a .870
OPS in 1110 AB at the AAA level. Lutz came back to the team with a bang in this
game, leading an unrelenting 51s attack with 4 hits and 3 RBI’s. Matt Bowman
got off to a great start on the mound for Las Vegas, but then struggled with control
in the 6th. All 5 runs he’d allow came off of two homeruns hit by
Isotopes lefties, which makes 12 homeruns allowed to lefties this year (only 1
allowed to a RHB). After Bowman settled down to finish the 6th, the
51s bullpen came out for the final 3 innings and kept the Isotopes off the
board.
Bowman
came into this start rolling lately, with 0 homeruns allowed over his last 6
starts (33.1 IP), and a 2.70 ERA/.674 OPS allowed during that stretch. Although
he only had an 11.3 K% (5% swinging strike rate) over those 6 starts, the .047
ISO allowed suggests that he really wasn’t getting hit hard. After retiring the
first 7 Isotopes batters of the game, Bowman would allow a solo blast to Tim
Wheeler that was lined over the LF wall. He’d work around a pair of batters in
the 3rd and 4th innings, but couldn’t escape trouble in
the 6th. He’d allow a pair of singles around a walk to load the
bases, and the Tim Wheeler launched a grand slam to left center that made it a
9-5 game. Bowman would induce groundouts from the next 3 batters to end the
frame, but a potentially great start went sour quick in that 6th inning.
The
51s jumped out against Lannan early in this start, check out the details and
highlights below. This series continues Friday night at 9:05 PM, with Darin
Gorski scheduled to pitch for Las Vegas.
Scoring Highlights
The
first 3 Las Vegas batters of the game would pick up hits and score against
Lannan in the 1st, with Dilson Herrera and T.J. Rivera picking up
singles, and Anthony Recker tripling them home.
Cory
Vaughn sparked a huge 2nd inning with a double to LF. Matthew Bowman
would bring him home and reach on an infield single two batters later, which
was the first of 4 straight singles from the 51s. Zach Lutz capped the inning
with a two run double to CF that made it an 8-0 game.
Brandon
Allen, Lutz, and Travis Taijeron hit consecutive singles leading off the 5th,
which led to another Vegas run and a 9-1 lead. Taijeron also added a double in this game
Lutz
capped his big night with an RBI single to RF in the 9th.
Defense highlights
T.J.
Rivera started a pair of double plays in each of the last two innings, and the
51s nearly turned another he started in the 4th inning.
Wilfredo
Tovar still really good at defense, made a perfect throw from the awkward angle
in the 6th.
If
you’re still haunted by the thought of a Mets second baseman dropping an easy
pop up, I apologize for the following GIF.
