Reviewing Michael Conforto’s Time With The B-Mets

With Michael Cuddyer heading to the DL, the Mets announced the promotion of top-prospect Michael Conforto Friday afternoon.

            As Michael Conforto makes his way to Queens for tonight’s game against the Mets – he doesn’t have far to travel, the B-Mets were in Trenton – Mets fans everywhere are getting excited for his arrival, but what should we expect from him? To answer that would require a crystal ball, and I seem to have misplaced mine, but that is the type of question often addressed in more than a dozen posts around the interwebs. Unless you just don’t follow the Mets minors at all, you’ve probably heard that this Conforto kid has a polished approach from the left side, some nice power potential, and won’t kill you defensively in LF. He’s been beating up on AA pitching from the moment he got there, only once going consecutive games without a hit, but it’s still a huge jump from AA to the majors. Instead of guessing how much he will or won’t hit in the majors based on a few months of minors action, below I review how his last two months in the minors have gone – it’s mostly been high’s for Conforto – with more minors game highlights than you’ll see anywhere else, and links to recaps from his time with the B-Mets.

5/20 – Hit the game-winning homerun in the top of the 9^th against a tough lefty reliever in his last week with the St. Lucie Mets.

5/30 – Made his AA debut on the same day as Robert Gsellman, who is one of the Mets top pitching prospects. Conforto went 0-2 in the game, but he was walked 3 times.

5/31 – Conforto picked up his first AA hit, and it was also his first triple as a pro. The RBI triple would tie the game, and then Conforto came home to give the B-Mets an 8^th inning lead.

6/2 – His first multi-hit game with Binghamton came in his next start, and both hits would knock in a run. It was also his first AA double.

6/3 – He went 1-3 with a walk and strikeout, but his hit came off of a lefty.

6/4 – The B-Mets managed only 2 hits in this game, and both came from Conforto, who added his second double.

6/5 – Conforto had another multi-hit game, this time against Reading, and again provided a huge hit for the B-Mets. This time, it was a walk off double in the 9^th inning, turning a 7-6 deficit into an 8-7 win.

6/6 – The B-Mets were shutout again, managing just 4 hits this time, but Conforto extended his hitting streak to 6 games with a single in the 9^th.

6/7 – Conforto picked up his first 3-hit game for the B-Mets, finishing a triple shy of the cycle.

6/9-6/11 – The B-Mets were in Bowie, which doesn’t get MiLB.tv coverage, but Conforto went 2-9 with a double. One hit streak ended at 7 games, but he’d start another that would last 9 games the next day.

6/12 – He’d go 1-3 with a walk, strikeout, and run scored in a game that took two days to finish.

6/13 – Kicked the scoring off in this game with a 1^st inning solo blast to right center field.

6/14 – His only hit in the game was a huge one, as he gave the B-Mets a walk off win with an RBI single grounded back up the middle.

6/15 – He went 1-5 in the game, but his only hit led to a run when the right fielder bobbled the ball.

6/17 – Picked up his second 3-hit game for the B-Mets while in Portland, including his 6^th double of the season, which he hit off the RF wall.

6/18 – Really wore out the Sea Dogs in this series, as he’d have a second straight 3-hit game with a double, and again he hit the double off the RF wall.

6/19 – Capped off his 9-game hit streak with a pair of hits in New Hampshire, including his second triple of the year.

6/22 – Finished the series in New Hampshire with another 2-hit game, including his eighth double of the year.

6/25 – Ended his longest hitless draught while with the B-Mets by picking up a single in the 8^th inning.

6/26 – Another wall ball for a double from Conforto – I’ve lost track of how many doubles he’s hit off the wall between St. Lucie and Binghamton this year, but I’m pretty sure it’s double-digits by now.

6/27 – He had 0 hits in this game, but I GIF’d two balls that he smoked to the wall, if you’re interested.

6/28 – Ho hum, just a boring single for Conforto in this game.

6/29 – His excuse me single in the 1^st was one of only two hits for the B-Mets in this game, but I added a good side angle GIF of his swing.

6/30 – Conforto had another 3-hit game in Erie, added an insane moon shot for his third AA homerun.

7/1 – He’d add an RBI hit during the B-Mets 4-run rally in the 3^rd inning, but Binghamton would end up losing this game 5-4.

7/2 – Conforto singled home Gavin Cecchini and L.J. Mazzilli during a 2^nd inning rally, something he may do for the New York Mets someday.

7/3 – His pair of hits in this game came off of lefty Josh Turley of Erie.

7/5 – It took him just over a month to reach his 10^th double.

7/8 – Picked up a single late in this game to avoid a second straight hitless game.

7/10 – His fifth and final 3-hit game came back in Portland, and he’d add a pair of RBI’s in this game too.

7/16 – Launched his fourth homerun over the left center field wall leading off the 7^th inning.

7/17 – His first of 3 straight multi-hit games against Trenton last week, pairing a single with a different XBH in each game.

7/18 – Just cleared the RF wall for his fifth homerun to give the B-Mets a 3-2 lead, which is how the game would end.

7/19 – I wouldn’t expect many triples from Conforto in the majors, but he managed 3 in his 45 games with the B-Mets.

7/20 – His final extra base hit for the B-Mets was an RBI double that came as part of a 3 run rally that led the B-Mets over New Britain this past Monday.

7/22 – Conforto’s final two hits for the B-Mets would come in New Britain, including an RBI single to give him 26 in his AA career.
