Recap
The
Sand Gnats lost a back-and-forth affair with Greenville Monday night, as Casey
Delgado just didn’t appear to have his best stuff against a very talented Drive
lineup. Savannah would jump out to a lead in the 1st during this one
thanks to a Eudor Garcia homerun, but Delgado gave both runs back and more in
the bottom half of the inning. Greenville would continue to have success at the
plate until Delgado left in the 6th, as Ben Griset was pretty sharp
after he took over. With Griset holding the Drive off the scoreboard, the Sand
Gnats were finally able to catch up again in the top of the 8th. But
then Darwin Frias gave the lead right back in the bottom of the 8th,
and the Gnats had no more comeback magic left in their bats.
The
first 3 batters in the Drive lineup – the impressive trio of Yoan Moncada,
Michael Chavis, and Rafael Devers – would hit Delgado the hardest, combining
for 5 hits, both homeruns he’d allow, and a drive to the monster from Moncada that
allowed a runner to advance from 2B to 3B. Delgado was not bad against the rest
of the lineup, but he still wasn’t getting the same swing-and-miss results he
has been with Savannah, so I don’t think I saw him at his best. But any inning
that featured at least two of those three Drive batters results in a run Monday
night.
This
series wraps up Tuesday night at 7:05 PM, with Edioglis Villasmil listed as the
Savannah starter.
Scoring Highlights
With
two outs in the 1st inning, Michael Katz picked up his first single
of the night, and then Eudor Garcia hit a homerun to give Savannah a 2-0 lead –
it was the second straight PA with a homerun for Eudor, who also added one in
the 9th Sunday. John Mora would follow Eudor with his first of two singles in the game, both shown here.
Tomas Nido started his big night with an infield single leading off the 2nd, and he’d end up on 3B after an E5 on the throw, before scoring on a sac fly from Vicente Lupo.
Luis Guillorme and Michael Katz hit back-to-back singles in the 5th, but Savannah would strand them on the corners.
Garcia doubled home Jonathan Johnson (walk) in the 7th, and then Michael Katz came home on an RBI groundout from John Mora.
Nido led off the 8th with a double, and then scored on an RBI triple from Lupo – Lupo would come home on a wild pitch to temporarily tie the game.
Bonus Defense
Luis
Guillorme had mostly routine plays (at least routine for him), but you can get
an idea of his quick transfer on these slow choppers. He also made a smart play, cutting off the throw to 2B early to get the runner trying to score at home instead.
Vicente
Lupo made a nice leaping catch on that drive to the wall from Moncada. He also started a double play on a fly ball late in the game.
