Recap
The
B-Mets starting pitching has been on fire over the past 6 weeks, and Seth Lugo
kept that streak going with 7 shutout innings against the Thunder Sunday
evening. Binghamton was limited to just two hits as Trenton shut them out
Saturday night, but they turned the table, and the offense came to life for 8
runs on 12 hits. It was a balanced attack, but Joe Benson’s three run bomb in
the 2nd inning was the big hit that put the B-Mets ahead for good.
Jeff Walters made his first appearance with the B-Mets of 2015, working around
a pair of singles for a scoreless 8th inning in relief of Lugo.
Akeel Morris would come out for a scoreless 9th, facing the minimum
after a nice double play was turned behind him (see below).
Lugo
was a little shaky early, but worked around two batters in each of the first
two innings, and then settled in for a great start. All 3 walks issued were
allowed to the first 8 Trenton batters, and then Lugo would allow just 3
singles over his final 5.2 IP. When his control is on, he will throw any of his
three pitches to either side of the plate and in any count, so he can really
keep batters off balance. Per @TimFinn521,
Lugo sat 88-94 with his fastball, 74-80 with his curveball, and 8-86 with his
changeup. It’s a poor angle on his stuff, but check out his 8 strikeouts below.
The
B-Mets jumped ahead behind Benson’s second homerun since joining the club, and
then added 5 more runs over the next 3 innings, so check out the details below.
The B-Mets head home to face New Britain Monday night at 6:35 PM, with Gabriel
Ynoa (7-6, 3.70 ERA) scheduled to pitch for Binghamton.
The
first two batters reached in the 2nd, and then Joe Benson launched a
three run homerun to get the B-Mets on the board.
Gavin
Cecchini led off the 3rd with a double, and then scored on an E5
with the bases loaded later in the frame.
Travis
d’Arnaud and Brandon Nimmo started the 5th with consecutive singles,
and then came around to score on consecutive RBI singles from Joe Benson and
L.J. Mazzilli.
Nimmo
added a single leading off the 6th inning.
Bonus Defense
There
was a pair of nicely turned double plays in this game.
