Bullpen:
Jeff Walters (9.00 ERA) – 1 IP, 2 H, R, SO, 2 FO
Post-game recap: In
what should be good news for future Mets relief help, Jeff Walters was assigned
to the St. Lucie Mets prior to Tuesday night’s game, as he continues his
comeback from 2014 Tommy John surgery. He allowed a run on a pair of hits and a
sac fly in the 9th, but it’s good to see that his comeback is coming
along - he was sitting 92-93 MPH, per the radio. The Mets would take a 1-0 lead in this game after their leadoff batter
Champ Stuart hit a solo blast to start the bottom of the 1st.
Charlotte jumped ahead with 3 runs in the 3rd, although two of the
runs were unearned thanks to two St. Lucie errors. Taylor would allow a leadoff
double in the 3rd before walking Braxton Lee to put runners on 1B
and 2B. Charlotte attempted to sac bunt the runners over, but an E1 allowed
everyone to be safe, and the bases were loaded with 0 outs. Kean Wong followed
with a sac fly to LF, but then E5 left to two extra runs scoring the play –
Perez cut the ball off to try for the runner advancing to 3B, but his throw
sailed wide and went up the LF line. Perez made up for it by sparking a two run
rally to tie the game in the 4th with a leadoff single. Dominic
Smith followed with a single into CF, and then a throwing error from Lee
allowed Perez to score while Smith ended up at 3B. After struggling in the 3rd
inning, Taylor would retire the next 12 batters before allowing a leadoff
single in the 8th. Charlotte would get the runner over on a sac
bunt, and then got him in on a sac fly to take back the lead. The insurance run
Walters allowed hurt, but it might’ve been a scoreless inning with a better
decision from Cruzado in RF on that first hit – Mike Marjama hit a sinking
liner towards RF and Cruzado went for the diving catch, but the ball dropping
in front of him and got by, which allowed Marjama to end up at 3B. The first
two Mets would reach in the bottom of the 9th, and a sac bunt got
them both into scoring position, but then Stuart struck out, and McNeil popped
out to end the game.

Post-game recap: The
K-Mets used a couple of early rallies to build up a 6-1 lead against
Greeneville in their series finale, and then the bullpen did a good job of
protecting the lead in relief of starter Darwin Ramos. Ramos labored through
the 1st inning, but limited the damage to just 1 run on a walk and a
pair of singles. The Mets took the lead with two runs in the 2nd
after the first two batters of the inning were walked. Luis Carpio provided the
big hit in the frame, doubling home both runs with two outs after the Astros
made a pitching change. The first 5 K-Mets batters would reach in the 3rd
– Mazeika and Berrios singled, Knight walked to load the bases, Ortega singled
home to, and then Rojas walked to reload the bases – and then Luis Carpio
singled home two more runs with another two out hit. Ramos finished his night
with a mixed 5th inning, as he’d allow two runs on a single and two
doubles, but recorded all 3 outs on strikeouts of the swinging variety. Nuez
took over for Ramos in the 6th and allowed a homerun to the first
batter he’d face, but then worked around a pair of singles in the 7th,
and finished his night with a 1-2-3 8th. Taylor Henry had a dominant
9th inning, striking out 2 of the 3 Greeneville batters to close out
the game and the series sweep.

Minors MVP of the Day
– Xorge Carrillo hasn’t been hitting as much as he did in 2014 this year (big BABIP dropoff so far, but improved ISO/BB%), but
he’s been great behind the plate, and had a huge night at the plate Tuesday.
Minors Cy of the Day
– Both Seth
Lugo and Darin Gorski were great, but Gorski picked up 10 K’s in the
night-cap for Las Vegas – Bowman and Gorski combined to give most of the 51s
pen a second straight night off.
