Recap
Michael
Fulmer continued to dominate the Eastern League on kids day at NYSEG Stadium
Thursday afternoon, and then the B-Mets came back later for a 2-1 win to finish
their home-stand on a high note. Fulmer continues to back my
assertion that he’s the #1 pitching prospect left in the Mets system, and
he’s now lowered his ERA by 1.8 runs over his last 6 starts, with a 41 K: 5 BB
ratio over 37.1 IP during that span. The B-Mets bats could get little going
against Rock Cats starter Matt Flemer, but Brock Peterson put them on the board
with a solo blast in the 6th, and then Jared King just missed a
blast of his own in the 7th, settling for an RBI double that brought
home the go-ahead run. Beck Wheeler and Jon Velasquez were excellent out of the
pen in relief of Fulmer, protecting the 2-1 lead with 2 perfect innings.
Fulmer
had been good for Binghamton since his first start, but he’s been DOMINANT
lately: 29.1 K%: 3.5 BB%, 15.1% swinging strike rate, 0.24 HR/9, and 25 hits
allowed over his last 37.1 IP. He started out very strong in this game, picking
up 5 strikeouts over the first 2 innings. The Cats got to Fulmer for the first
run of the game in the 4th after Dustin Lawley booted a groundball
that should’ve been the third out of the inning. The next batter doubled would
double home the runner from 3B, but the inning ended on another groundball
chance at 3B for Lawley. He bounced back to retire 10 of the final 11 batters
before Beck Wheeler took over in the 8th.
The
B-Mets head to Portland for a 4-game weekend series before the All-Star break
next week. John Gant is scheduled to make his second start for Binghamton since
returning from PSL, with a start time of 7:00 PM.
Scoring Highlights
The
B-Mets first got on the board when Brock Peterson launched his fifth homerun
since joining the team in the 6th inning. Brandon Nimmo would follow
with his only hit of the game.
Gavin
Cecchini kept the 7th inning alive with a one out single to RF, and
then came around to score on an RBI double from Jared King.
Bonus Defense
As
long as Gavin Cecchini’s defense at SS continues to be a hot topic among Mets
fans, I will continue to post as many GIFs of him handling grounders as I can.
