Recap
Robert
Gsellman’s struggle to adjust to AA pitching continued Monday night, and he put
the B-Mets too far behind for a comeback. Binghamton would get plenty of hits
in this one, but only went 2-9 with runners in scoring position, failing to
capitalize on some chances to break away early. Gavin Cecchini and L.J.
Mazzilli extended their hitting streaks to 7 games, but it was a rare quiet
night from Michael Conforto behind them, as he’d strikeout twice. Beck Wheeler
and Adam Kolarek combined for 3 scoreless innings out of the pen, but Conforto
couldn’t come through with Mazzilli on1B and two outs in the 9th
inning.
The
Sea Dogs jumped on Gsellman for a run in the 1st inning after Marco
Hernandez hit a leadoff triple on a fly ball that Brandon Nimmo probably
should’ve caught – he had to run back a long way, but he misjudged the ball and
ended up too far to the right and reaching across his body – and then scored on
a groundout. After the leadoff triple, Gsellman would retire the next 8 in a
row. He’d allow 4 well-struck singles in the 4th inning for 3 more
Portland runs, as the Sea Dogs executed two well-timed sacrifices in the
inning. While I don’t agree with having Carlos Asuaje sac bunt with two on and
0 outs in the 4th inning of a AA game, he dropped down a nice one to
advance runners to 2B and 3B, and it’s still a better outcome than not
advancing the runners. With one out and the bases loaded, Cole Sturgeon brought
home the third run of the inning with a sac fly to CF. Gsellman would finally
pick up his first strikeout to start the 5th, adding one more in the
6th. With two outs in the 6th, he’d allow a solo blast to
Jake Romanski, and then a triple to Sturgeon, before getting a fly out to end
his frame. He was sitting low-90’s, but they don’t use the CF camera’s enough
in Binghamton to get a good idea of how many curveballs/changeups he threw. He’s
been hit hard so far with Binghamton, so let’s see what adjustments he can
make.
The
B-Mets welcome New Britain into town for a series that begins Tuesday at 6:35,
with Seth Lugo scheduled to pitch for Binghamton.
Scoring Highlights
Gavin
Cecchini had a pair of hits, increasing his hitting streak to 7 straight games
in the process. He led off both the 1st and 3rd inning
with a single.
Brock Peterson reached on an E5 to start the 2nd inning, and then moved over to 3B on a double from Brandon Nimmo, before scoring on an RBI single to LF from Josh Rodriguez.
Dustin Lawley made it a one-run game when he went deep for his fifth bomb of the year in the 4th inning, bringing home J Rod, who had reached on a double.
Lawley would double home Brock (walk) in the 8th, which once again made it a one-run game.
Bonus Defense
Gavin
Cecchini handled this roller just fine.
