Recap
With
one swing in the 2nd inning, Gavin Cecchini provided the B-Mets
faithful in attendance with an early fireworks show, launching a grand slam to
LF to put Binghamton ahead for good. Starter Michael Fulmer battled some long
innings throughout this start (all except for his very quick 5th
inning), but he was mostly in control against the Sea Dogs. He’d exit after 6
having retired 10 of the final 12 Portland batters to face him. Adam Kolarek,
Matt Koch, and Jon Velasquez combined for 3 scoreless innings out of the B-Mets
pen, with Velasquez picking up his first AA save since May 12th.
Fulmer
has been strong for Binghamton all season, but his recent run of success has
been on another level: 5 GS, 0.59 ERA, 30.1 IP, 19 H, 29.8 K%: 3.5 BB%, 16%
Swinging strike rate. After retiring the first 5 batters in the game, Fulmer
allowed a single to Manuel Margot, and then things got weird. Margot went to 2B
on a passed ball, and then scored on a strikeout swinging/E2 – Carrillo blocked
strike 3 in the dirt, but then his throw to 1B sailed high. In the 3rd,
Cole Sturgeon led off with a well-struck double to RF, and then scored on a two
out double from Jantzen Witte.
This
series continues Sunday evening at 6:35 PM, and with John Gant on turn and in Binghamton,
I’d expect him to be making the start.
Scoring Highlights
L.J.
Mazzilli singled and stole 2B in the 1st, but the B-Mets couldn’t
get him in.
Josh
Rodriguez drew a one out walk, Aderlin Rodriguez followed with a single, and
then Xorge Carrillo reached on an E5 to load the bases for Gavin Cecchini in
the 2nd. Cecchini came through with a grand slam to give Fulmer all
of the scoring he would need in this game.
Aderlin
added his 9th bomb of the year in the 7th.
Bonus Defense
Gavin
Cecchini made some nice plays in the field behind Fulmer.
L.J. Mazzilli with a great play on the drag bunt.
