From
Kiley McDaniel’s prospect
chat: “Caught a game of [Dominic Smith] in Florida and hope to get another
on my next trip down later this month. Two scouts I talked to said he was the
best hitter in the league and the raw power is still there, so this is just one
of those “power will show up in games later” situations. The track record of
really good hitters getting to that power is very positive, so as long as the
contact is still good, I think it comes together. The pre-draft Todd Helton
comp is still in the ballpark.”
Also,
“[Gavin Cecchini] can play short, but it’ll never be fantastic.”
ICYMI,
Rafael Montero was moved to the GCL Mets today to begin his rehab.

Post-game recap: The
Tourists jumped ahead early and never looked back against the Sand Gnats
Tuesday night, as these two teams opened a series in Savannah. Casey Delado
retired the first two batters of the 1st inning in short order, but
then allowed a single and homerun to put Savannah in a 2-0 hole before they
came to the plate. Asheville would tack on 2 more in the 2nd, which
was all they’d need against a light offensive attack from the Sand Gnats. The
Gnats got a run back on a sac fly from Katz in the 3rd inning, but
that was all they could out of a bases loaded, 0 outs situation. They managed 3
hits (including a double with Moore on 1B) in the 6th, but could
only score 1 in the frame, and left the bases loaded. Villasmil did a good job
over his first two innings in relief of Delgado, but the Toursits would light
him up for 3 runs in the 9th, which was the final nail in the coffin
for this game.

Post-game recap: Welcome
to the GCL, where the final score doesn’t really matter, but the guys beginning
their rehabs there often do. Tuesday featured the sudden reappearance of Rafael
Montero, another homerun from Jhoan Urena, a triple from Ivan Wilson, and a
third straight scoreless appearance from Luis Mateo. Montero threw 11 pitches
(6 strikes) in the 1st inning, allowing a leadoff single (base
runner would be eliminated on a CS), and striking out the final batter of the
frame. The actual game was very back-and-forth, with the Mets taking a 1-0 lead
in the 1st inning on the RBI triple from Wilson (Urena scored from
1B on the play). Guedez retired the first 5 batters that he’d face, but then
allowed 3 straight hits for 2 runs and a Cardinals lead. The Mets would take
the lead back with a bases loaded HBP and sac fly in the bottom of the 3rd.
The Cardinals would tie it up in the 4th, but again the Mets came
right back to take the lead, scoring 2 runs without a hit. Luis Mateo came in
for the 7th and worked around a leadoff single, striking out a
batter before inducing two groundouts. The Cardinals took a one-run lead in the
top of the 9th, but Jhoan Urena turned on the first pitch in the 9th
for a solo blast to tie the game. Ali Sanchez would reach on a single in the
inning, so the speedy Cecilio Aybar was substituted as a pinch-runner, and he’d
come around to score on an RBI single from Will Barring for a walk off win.
Minors MVP of the Day
– Jhoan Urena launched the first pitch of the 9th inning for a game-tying homerun, his second straight game with a GCL HR. Hopefully that rehab is over soon.
