Recap
The
Mets upset a lot of fans when they announced that Logan Verrett would be sent
down in place of Jenrry Mejia earlier in the week, but he clearly took the
demotion in stride, as he went down and threw the best start I’ve ever seen
from him. We all saw how well he was pitching for the Mets in the majors (0.73
ERA/2.10 FIP, 26.7 K%: 8.9 BB%, 14% swinging strike rate over his 12.1 IP), so
it’s not really surprising that he’d come down and pitch well, but he dominated
the Bees lineup Thursday night. After scoring 6 runs in the double-header
opener, including 4 over the final 2 innings, the Las Vegas bats would go quiet
in the nightcap, but the two runs they scratched out was more than enough for
Verrett and the 51s bullpen.
Verrett
was better last year than his overall numbers with Las Vegas would suggest,
occasionally putting together starts that really made you turn your head, but he’s
clearly taken a step forward this year. With Thursday’s announcement
of the lat injury to Steven Matz, Verrett’s demotion to start in this game
makes more sense, as they’re probably just stretching him out for spot starts
or to become the team’s 6th starter until Matz is ready (three weeks
for Matz? The phrase habitual
liar comes to mind, but I’m always optimistic). But the 60 pitches is not
significantly more than the 51 he threw in his last appearance with the Mets,
so his pitch count wasn’t exactly stretched out in this appearance, at least
not aggressively so (also, this). The only trouble Verrett ran into during this start came
in the 3rd, when he allowed a hit to each of the first two batters.
Kaleb Cowart led off with a single, and then Grant Green followed with his 19th
double of the year, but the Bees momentum was killed when Cowart was thrown out
at home on the play. Verrett would strikeout the next batter before inducing a
groundout to Tovar to end the threat. Verrett would retire the final 8 batters
he’d face, and then handed the game off to Cody Satterwhite and the bullpen in
the 6th.
Dilson
Herrera walked to lead off the 1st inning, and then came around on
an RBI single from Alex Castellanos to put Las Vegas up 1-0 early. The 51s had
a chance for more in the inning, as Boyd followed the RBI single with a double
to CF, but Castellanos would be thrown out at home on the play. Castellanos would
lead off the 4th with a double to LF, and then came around to score
on a sac fly from Brandon Allen two batters later.
The
51s pen combined to do a great job, with Cody Satterwhite and Scott Rice facing
same-side batters only in the 6th, and then Zack Thornton picking up
his second save in as many appearances.
The
series continues Friday night at 10:05 PM, with Dillon Gee scheduled to pitch
for Las Vegas.
