Recap
Luis
Cessa bounced back from a rough start in his PCL debut to overwhelm the Bee’s
in the first game of their double-header Thursday night. Cessa just got better
as the game wore on, mixing in his breaking ball and changeup more after
establishing the fastball early (check out the pitch log below for more
details). Las Vegas gave him an early lead, and he protected it well into the 6th,
but some shoddy defense behind him opened the door for a big inning after Chase
Bradford took over. The 51s would bounce back to take the lead in the bottom of
the 6th, and then Chase Huchingson would come out of the pen to bail
out Bradford in the 7th, which earned him his first PCL save.
Cessa
was given a 1-0 lead in the 1st when Daniel Muno hit a blast into
the LF corner that both just stayed fair, and just got over the tall wall at
Cashman. He’d step up big to protect that lead in the 2nd, escaping a
jam that had runners on 2B and 3B with just one out. He responded with a
strikeout of Gary Brown before inducing a weak comebacker from Kaleb Cowart
(Cowart had a great AB though), which was huge for the momentum of this game.
After the double that put Cessa in that tough situation, he would retire 13 of
the next 16 batters, with one of those runners reaching on an E6.
When
he left, the game was still scoreless, but two errors in the 6th meant
Chase Bradford was coming into a situation with runners on 2B and 3B and two
outs. Bradford would allow both runs to score on a wild pitch and double
allowed, and then the Bees took the lead on an RBI single before Bradford could
finish the frame. The 51s would load the bases for Cory Vaughn in the bottom
half of the 6th, and he came through with a bases clearing double to
put Las Vegas back on top.
These
two teams would play another game Thursday night, with Logan Verrett making the
start for Las Vegas in the nightcap.
