Recap
The
B-Mets offensive attack was stunted by three double plays Thursday night, as
they lost the second half opener to their rival Trenton Thunder. Michael Fulmer
came in with only 2 ER allowed over his last 6 starts (37.1 IP), but Trenton
tagged him for 3 runs (including 2 ER) over his 5 innings. He was pitching with
two days of extra rest, which might explain why he was a little wild
throughout. Still, the B-Mets pitching continued to display the dominant
level of pitching shown over the last month of the first half, and gave
this team a great chance to win.
Fulmer
got into trouble right away, allowing a double to the first Trenton batter of
the game, with the runner coming around to score on consecutive groundouts. He’d
retire the first two in the 2nd inning, but then allowed an infield
single, although a caught steal meant he officially faced the minimum in the
frame. He walked the first batter in the 3rd, but a double play erased
the runner, which was huge, because Danny Oh followed with a double to RF. Gary
Sanchez hit a one out double to RF off of Fulmer in the 4th, and the
Thunder would get another run on an RBI groundout to take a 2-0 lead. Fulmer
made two key mistakes that led to the decisive Trenton run in the 5th,
walking the first batter, and then throwing a pickoff attempt away, which
allowed the runner to move to 3B. Ali Castillo would come through with a two
out single for Trenton, one batter before Fulmer ended his night by inducing a
groundout to 2B. Overall, Fulmer did a good job considering he had spotty
fastball command (radio had him 94-96), which led to a 55% strike rate. His
slider was still very sharp, and he had good results from his changeup, but he got
behind in the count too often, throwing a first pitch strike to only 10 of 21
batters faced. He hadn’t been throwing the changeup as often during his recent hot
stretch because he hadn’t needed it, but it’s been effective for him throughout
the season – check out some quotes from him about the changeup here.
The
B-Mets would charge back for two runs (see below for details and highlights),
but couldn’t tie the game up, and fell to 3.5 games behind Trenton with the
loss. The series continues Friday night at 7:05 PM, with John Gant (3-4, 4.13
ERA) scheduled to pitch for Binghamton.
Scoring Highlights
L.J.
Mazzilli hit a one out single in the 1st inning, but he’d be
stranded at 2B.
Michael
Conforto led off the 7th with a solo blast to put the B-Mets on the
board. Brandon Nimmo would pick up a single two batters later to knock out
Trenton starter Kyle Haynes.
Jared
King had a pair of singles and a stolen base in this game:
With one out in the 3rd inning.
With one out and Joe Benson on 1B in the 8th
inning.
Bonus Defense
Michael
Conforto played the single off the wall perfectly in the 6th, and
then threw a rocket to get Gary Sanchez at 2B.
Gavin
Cecchini and L.J. Mazzilli had several chances during this game, with their
best plays shown below.
Xorge
Carrillo has been great behind the plate for the B-Mets this year, and had no
problem nailing the runner at 2B after the dirt ball bounced a little bit away
from him.
