Recap

Things got a little balky when the Brooklyn Cyclones and Staten Island Yankees continued their heated rivalry Wednesday night, as Brooklyn pitchers were charged with two balks, and that’s how the game ended. The Cyclones got two great pitching performances from a pair of 2013 second round picks, but could only muster 4 hits on their end, wasting several big opportunities in a game that would come down to the wire. Both Blake Taylor and Andrew Church were on an ~60 pitch count limit, which took care of the regularly scheduled 9 innings, and Carlos Valdez took over for them in the 10th. The usually reliable Valdez allowed a pair of singles in the frame to put runners on the corners with two outs, and was then charged with a balk for not coming to a complete set position. The balk brought home the winning run for Staten Island, giving the Cyclones a perfectly Metsian loss.
The series continues Thursday night at MCU Park in Brooklyn, with Matt Blackham scheduled to pitch for the Cyclones in a game that should be available on SNY.

Scoring Highlights

Jeff Diehl picked up the Cyclones first hit of the game leading off the 4th, but he’d be picked off in the frame.

After Brandon Brosher reached on a HBP with one out in the 6th, David Thompson doubled him to 3B (the wind was apparently pretty wild at times in the game). Jeff Diehl followed with a walk, and then 2 runs came home on a fielder’s choice/E6.

Tucker Tharp hit a one out ground-rule double off the top of the wall in the 7th that the announcers thought was a homerun.

Alfredo Reyes hit a one out single in the 9th, but the inning ended when Tharp lined into a double play.

The Cyclones were robbed of a pair of hits from Yankees center fielder Jeff Hendrix.

David Thompson gave this one a nice ride to right center field

Bonus Defense

Here’s an example of Vinny Siena in the field during the 1st inning.

Brandon Brosher appeared to have thrown the runner out at 2B in the 1st, but the pitch was actually ball 4.

David Thompson made an error in the game, but also had a few good plays.

Alfredo Reyes looked very good at SS, making several nice plays, and nearly making an amazing play.
