Recap
It
has been a wild season to date for the Mets, Dillon Gee, and Jenrry Mejia, but
things went well for all 3 Sunday – Steven Matz led the Mets, Gee turned in his
best AAA outing, and Mejia picked up the save. Before the season started, if
someone told Mets brass that Gee would allow only 2 runs over 7 innings on July
5th, and then Mejia would come in and pick up the save, I’m sure
they would’ve been happy to mark down one win on their calendar. Of course,
they would’ve been marking down the wrong calendar, because that just happened
for their AAA affiliate Las Vegas 51s.
Gee
was very sharp early, retiring the first 8 batters before Isotopes starter
Aaron Laffey reached on a single into LF. Travis Taijeron gave Gee a lead to
work with when he led off the 2nd with his 14th bomb of
the year, and it was a no-doubter of a moon shot to left center field. Brandon
allen led off the 4th with a double, and then came around to score
on a sac fly from Dan Rohlfing. Dilson Herrera finished the 51s scoring when he
led off the 5th with a solo blast to left center field. Gee would
allow a single and double to the first two Isotopes batters in the 6th,
putting runners on 2B and 3B with 0 outs. Chrithian Adamez singled home both
runs to end the shutout bid, and then Albuquerque pulled to within a run on a
sac fly. The 51s bullpen would take over for Gee in the 8th and hold
onto the one run lead, with Chase Huchingson and Zack Thornton combining for a
scoreless inning ahead of Mejia.
This
series continues Monday night at 10:05 PM, with Matthew Bowman scheduled to
pitch for Las Vegas.
