Post-game recap: The
Mets got another strong start from Kevin McGowan, who has dropped his ERA over
a run during his last 10 starts, and then got hot late for a comeback win in
the rubber match against Charlotte. McGowan started strong, but the Stone Crabs
would battle him for 5 long at bats in the 3rd to grind out the
first run of the game. An E4 with 0 outs in the 4th inning opened
the door for another Stone Crabs run, but McGowan was able to escape further
damage by stranding the bases loaded. The Mets got on the scoreboard in the 5th
when Evans doubles home Sabol. In the 7th, Smith would spark a 3-run
rally with a leadoff single. Stefan Sabol would double home two runs in the
inning, which you can see in the tweet below, and then Phil Evans followed with
another RBI hit to give St. Lucie a 4-2 lead – talk about making up for that
earlier error. McNeil led off the 8th inning with a single to spark
another 3-run rally in the 8th. The first 5 batters would reach in
the inning, capped by a two run double from Victor Cruzado – check out the RBI
single from Jairo Perez below. The St. Lucie pen has already lost some of their
best pitchers, but the two lefties to pitch in this game have been consistently
good for the Mets this year, and I’d love to check them out with the B-Mets!

Post-game recap: In
a game that would be cut short when lightning was spotted just before Brandon
Brosher’s AB started in the bottom of the 7th, the Cyclones win was
the second most important outcome from the night. The highlight of the night
was the NYPL debut of two potential stud-pitching prospects within the system,
Blake Taylor and Andrew Church. The Mets acquired Taylor (19 years old) as the
main piece in the Ike Davis trade last year, although he was clearly a high
risk/high reward addition to the system as someone so far from the majors.
Church (20) was the Mets 2nd round pick from 2013, so the Mets were
obviously pretty high on his potential. Both pitchers very good Thursday night,
with each allowing a pair of base runners over 3 scoreless innings. The
Cyclones scored the only run in the game in the bottom of the 3rd,
when Tucker Tharp lined a double into left center field to knock home Zabala
from 2B.

Adrian Almeida (L, 0-1, 6.75 ERA) – 1 IP, 2 H, 3 R (2 ER), 2
BB, SO, 1 GO: 1 FO
Post-game recap:
The K-Mets overcame an early 4-0 deficit to take a 6-5 lead in the 7th,
but Feliz allowed the tying run to score without recording an out in the top of
the 9th, and then the Twins put up a 3-spot against Almeida in the
11th inning. Manoah picked up 4 strikeouts over the first two
innings, but then really struggled in the 3rd, and hurt himself in
the frame when he committed an error attempting to field a sac bunt. The next
batter would single home both runs, and then Manoah allowed a two run homerun
to LaMonte Wade. Kingsport would cut the lead in half during the bottom of the
3rd, sparked by a leadoff single from Dale Burdick in his first
Kingsport AB. Burdick would scored on an E1 after Valencia followed with a
single into RF, and then Valencia came home on a passed ball. After
Elizabethton extended their lead to 5-2 in the top of the 7th,
Kingsport exploded for 4 runs to take the lead in the bottom half of the frame.
The big hits came with two on and two outs, as Carpio and Kaczmarski hit
back-to-back doubles for 3 runs. McIlraith had walked the bases loaded as he
worked his second inning of the night, so the K-Mets went to Feliz, who escaped
the threat by inducing a lineout to LF. Kingsport went back to Feliz for the 9th
and he’d allow single, wild pitch, and RBI double before Witt Haggard took
over. Haggard was great, but Kingsport couldn’t bring home the winning run in
the 9th or 10th innings. The game became an Appy league
classic when Almeida came in for the 11th, as things got a little wacky:
walk, balk, single, pop out, E5, RBI single, stolen base, run scoring wild
pitch, strike out, walk, fly out. Kingsport would put together a two out threat
in the bottom half of the 11th, but Berrios struck out swinging to
end the game – Dash had picked up an RBI single in the frame, and then Ortega
doubled to put the tying runs in scoring position for Berrios.

Post-game recap: The
GCL Mets got a 7-inning no-hitter from starter Merandy Gonzalez Thursday
afternoon, but split two games with the GCL Marlins for the day. These two
teams would first make up a game from earlier in the season, which the Marlins
would come back to win in the 9th. More on the Gonzalez no-hitter here. It was the second extended performance for Merandy
with 0 hits allowed, as he started the season with 5 perfect innings in an
appearance on 6/22, striking out 7 batters that day. In game one, Chris Flexen threw
2 scoreless innings for Savannah, and Max Wotell picked up 2 strikeouts during
his second pro appearance. Jose Maria provided most of the Mets offense in game
two, twice doubling on groundballs down the LF line.
Minors MVP of the Day
– Eudor Garcia continued his hot week with another homerun, his third since
Sunday night – great timing considering the MiLB.tv coverage this week!
Minors Cy of the Day
– Obviously Merandy Gonzalez, who threw a 7-inning
no-hitter for the GCL Mets.
