July 6-12, 2015
Keeping
track of the hottest minor leaguers in the Mets farm system, I will be rotating
through the lower level teams covered here.
Hitter of the
Week: I didn’t have high expectations for Alex Castellanos coming into
the 2015 season, but I have long since become a fan, and have often called for
his promotion around these parts.
Starting Pitcher
of the Week: Seth Lugo gave the B-Mets two scoreless appearances last
week, which gave him the edge over several strong single-start weeks.
Relief Pitcher of
the Week: Christian Montgomery struck out 7 of 11 batters he faced with
Brooklyn last week, continuing a really strong start for the Cyclones.
Team of the Week:
Las Vegas finished their first half on fire, with a 6-win week going into the
break.
Previous weeks: 4/9-19,
4/20-26,
4/27-5/3,
5/4-10,

record
Pitchers
Matthew Bowman – 8 IP, 7 H, 3 R (2 ER), 2 BB, 6 SO, 124
Pitches (80 Strikes), 13 GO: 1 FO; It
looks like Bowman has made some adjustments lately, as he’s pitched to a 2.70
ERA/.674 OPS allowed over his last 6 appearances (5 GS, 33.1 IP) Recap
Luis Cessa – 5.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R (0 ER), 6 SO, 93 Pitches (63
Strikes), 8 GO: 3 FO; His second start
with Las Vegas went much better than his first, but the PCL can be a rocky
transition for any pitcher (just look at Dillon Gee) Recap
Darin Gorski – 7 IP, 4 H, R (0 ER), BB, 11 SO, 111 Pitches
(70 Strikes), 1 GO: 5 FO; Just 3 ER over
his last 19.2 IP, with 18 K: 5 BB during that span, and a .590 OPS allowed Recap
Logan Verrett – 5 IP, 3 H, BB, 6 SO, 60 Pitches (42
Strikes), 2 GO: 5 FO; He was great during
his two week stint with the Mets, allowing just 1 ER over 12.1 IP, with 12 SO:
4 BB, and only 4 hits allowed (all singles) Recap
Scott Rice – 3 G, 2.1 IP, 4 SO; He’s allowed just 2 ER over his last 17 appearances, but that stretch
covers just 10.1 IP, with 11 K: 8 BB during that span
Cody Satterwhite – 3 G, 2.2 IP, 2 H, 3 SO, .400 OPS allowed;
It’s been a bumpy season for Satterwhite,
but bounced back from an uncharacteristically wild stretch this week (7 walks
allowed over his previous 11.2 IP for a 14.3% BB-rate, after 11 over his first
31.2 IP for 7.9% BB-rate)
Zack Thornton – 3 G, 3 IP, H, 3 SO, .300 OPS allowed; Since a hiccup in mid-June, Thornton has
allowed just 1 R over his last 12 appearances (10.2 IP), with 12 K: 1 BB and a
.405 OPS allowed during that span
Batters
Brandon Allen – 16 PA, .385/.438/.692, 3 R, 2B, HR, 4 RBI, 2
BB, SF, SB, SO; He has a 1.096 OPS over
the last month of 51s action (92 PA) thanks to 9 doubles and 4 homeruns
Alex Castellanos – 25 PA, .458/.480/.833, 5 R, 3 2B, 2 HR, 7
RBI, BB, 5 SO; After an 0-for-6-games,
Castellanos has a hit in 27 of 34 games, with a .390/.440/.683 slash during
that span, including 18 doubles and 6 homeruns, with a 25.4 K%: 6.7 BB%
Dilson Herrera – 27 PA, .292/.370/.458, 4 R, 4 2B, 2 RBI, 2
BB, HBP, 2 SB, 7 SO; High strikeout rate
since returning to Las Vegas, but has basically picked up where he left off
Dan Rohlfing – 13 PA, .333/.385/.583, 4 R, 3 2B, 2 RBI, HBP,
5 SO; Two straight weeks on the prospect
hot sheet for Rohlfing, who is 8-25 with 6 doubles during that span
Cory Vaughn – 20 PA, .316/.350/.684, 4 R, 4 2B, HR, 7 RBI,
BB, 6 SO; He has 8 XBH over his past 10
games played after only 5 XBH over his first 46 games played
Binghamton Mets 46-42
5-2 record
Pitchers
Michael Fulmer – 7 IP, 6 H, R (0 ER), 7 SO, 93 Pitches (63
Strikes), 5 GO: 5 FO; The streak of pure
dominance continued for Fulmer, who is down to a 0.48 ERA over his last 37.1 IP
(6 GS) for Binghamton, with 41 K: 5 BB (29.1 K%: 3.5 BB%), a .492 OPS allowed,
and a 15% swinging strike rate induced Recap
John Gant – 6 IP, 5 H, 3 R (2 ER), 3 BB, 4 SO, 97 Pitches
(59 Strikes), 9 GO: 3 FO; He’s looked
more confident on the mound in his two starts since returning to the B-Mets,
putting a 0 spot in the walk column for the first time in his last start Recap
Seth Lugo – 11 IP, 6 H, 4 BB, 10 SO, HBP, 194 Pitches (121
Strikes), 13 GO: 7 FO; Appears to be back
on track after an underwhelming June, allowing just 6 R over his last 23.2 IP
(2.28 ERA)
Gabriel Ynoa – 8 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 SO, 78 Pitches (51
Strikes), 12 GO: 4 FO; Since allowing 8
ER over just 3 IP on 6/10, Ynoa has a 1.63 ERA over 38.2 IP (7.2 IP/start!),
with 24 hits allowed (.452 OPS), and a 15 K: 2 BB ratio Recap
Matt Koch – 2 G, 4 IP, 3 H, 2 SO, .429 OPS; He’s been a dominant reliever for the
B-Mets, with a 1.83 ERA over 34.1 IP since his full-time move to the pen
Jon Velasquez – 3 G, 3 IP, SO; He’s bounced between AA and AAA several times already this season, but
all he does is put up 0’s, with 27 of 33 scoreless appearances this year
(81.8%)
Beck Wheeler – 3 G, 4 IP, H, BB, 4 SO; He’s been a dominant reliever for the B-Mets since mid-May, with only 1
ER allowed over his last 17 appearances (19.1 IP)
Batters
Xorge Carrillo – 18 PA, .357/.500/.786, 4 R, 3 2B, HR, 5
RBI, 2 BB, 2 HBP, SO; After a very cold
June, Carrillo has been hitting for more pop lately, with 5 XBH over his last 9
games
Gavin Cecchini – 35 PA, .464/.571/.571, 7 R, 2B, 3B, RBI, 7
BB, 2 SO; The errors keep piling up, but
Cecchini is 24-75 with 5 XBH over his last 18 games
Dustin Lawley – 17 PA, .200/.294/.667, 3 R, 2B, 2 HR, 4 RBI,
2 BB, 4 SO; He didn’t have many hits, but
the hits he had did damage
Brandon Nimmo – 22 PA, .381/.409/.429, 3 R, 2B, RBI, BB, 4
SO; He has a .276 average since
returning, but only 4 doubles and a 22 K: 6 BB ratio over 93 PA
Eudy Pina – 15 PA, .429/.400/.429, 2 RBI, SF, 3 SO; Eudy has a .910 OPS and only a 11.3 K% over
his last 17 games played (62 PA), but a lower OBP (.377) than average (.383)
during that span thanks to 0 walks
Aderlin Rodriguez – 11 PA, .364/.364/.636, 2 R, HR, RBI, 4
SO; Has a .906 OPS over his last 10
starts, but the 9 K: 0 BB during that span is the type of thing limiting his
playing time with Binghamton
Josh Rodriguez – 27 PA, .481/.481/.704, 3 R, 6 2B, 5 RBI,
SB, 3 SO; It’s good that he’s helping the
B-Mets win, but it seems like his presence at 3B is blocking Jeff McNeil from a
much deserved promotion
St. Lucie Mets 45-43
5-2 record
Pitchers
Miller Diaz – 2 GS, 2.40 ERA, 15 IP, 13 H, 5 R (4 ER), BB,
10 SO, HR, HBP; He was excellent in
Lakeland over the weekend, allowing 0 BB for the first time all season
Mickey Jannis – 6 IP, 5 H, 4 R (3 ER), 4 BB, 5 SO, HBP, 7
GO: 2 FO; Check out the Astromets
Mind report for more on this hard-throwing knuckler
Kevin McGowan – 6.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R (1 ER), 5 BB, 3 SO, 9 GO: 5
FO; He’s been left in too long in a few
starts this year, but has arguably been the most consistent pitcher to stick in
the PSL rotation this season
Casey Meisner – 6.1 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 3 BB, SO, 7 GO: 5 FO; He’s been effective over his first 3 starts
with St. Lucie (2.84 ERA, 19 IP), but has a less than stellar 11 K: 7 BB so far
Logan Taylor – 14 IP, 9 H, 4 R (2 ER), 4 BB, 10 SO, 14 GO: 12
FO; He’s allowed 1 ER or less in 5 of his
last 8 starts (49.1 IP)
Mike Hepple – 2 G, 2.2 IP, H, BB, SO, HBP; He’s been very effective against RHB’s this
year, but has a poor K: BB ratio against both sides
Batters
Phillip Evans – 23 PA, .368/.478/.579, 4 2B, 5 RBI, 4 BB, 4
SO, GIDP; It’s good to see the 22-year
old Evans putting together two straight strong weeks, but he really needs to
sustain this level of production for the rest of the season to resurrect his
prospect status
Stefan Sabol – 27 PA, .304/.407/.391, 3 R, 2 2B, 4 RBI, 4
BB, 4 SO, GIDP, 2 CS; He had cooled down
some after his hot start with St. Lucie, but then came through with some big
hits for the Mets last week
Dominic Smith – 29 PA, .346/.414/.654, 7 R, 2 2B, 2 HR, 4
RBI, 3 BB, 4 SO, CS; His BB-rate still
needs to improve for the level, but little else holding him down at this point
Savannah Sand Gnats 45-42
3-5 record
Pitchers
Martires Arias – 6 IP, 4 H, R, 3 BB, 3 SO, 10 GO: 1 FO; He hasn’t allowed more than 2 ER in a start
since June, with a 25.5 K% over his last 32.1 IP (6 starts), but control will
be key as he makes his FSL debut this week Recap
Michael Gibbons- 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, BB, 4 SO, HR, 5 GO: 2 FO; It’s been quite a wild ride so far for
Gibbons, with 5 starts across 4 levels of the minors to start his career,
covering A-, A, A+, and AA Recap
Ricky Knapp – 7 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 3 SO, 9 GO: 6 FO; Bounced back from 2 subpar performances to
give Savannah 7 great innings in game two of their double-header (after game
one had lasted 15 IP)
Corey Oswalt – 7 IP, 4 H, 2 R (1 ER), 2 BB, 2 SO, HR, 6 GO:
8 FO; He’s been dominating lately for
Savannah, with a 1.01 ERA/.588 OPS allowed over his last 4 starts (26.2 IP)
Paul Paez – 2 G, 3 IP, 2 H, 3 SO; He has a 2.03 ERA while averaging 2 IP/appearance in his 13 games since
joining the team late in 2015
Batters
Eudor Garcia – 29 PA, .296/.345/.556, 4 R, 2B, 2 HR, 8 RBI,
BB, HBP, 7 SO; He hit 3 impressive
homeruns during the Sand Gnats road trip through parks with MiLB.tv coverage
Tomas Nido – 14 PA, .333/.385/.667, 3 R, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, BB,
SH, SB, 3 SO, GIDP; The 21-year old
catcher has 6 doubles, 2 triples, and 3 homeruns over his last 100 AB, which is
good for a .791 OPS
Brooklyn Cyclones 15-7
5-1 record
Pitchers
Gaby Almonte – 5.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R (1 ER), 2 SO, 69 Pitches (46
Strikes), 7 GO: 3 FO; He allowed 6 runs
in one inning during his first start, but just 2 ER over his last 3 starts
(17.1 IP)
Kevin Canelon – 6.1 IP, 2 H, R, BB, 4 SO, HR, 89 Pitches (62
Strikes), 5 GO: 5 FO; He’s allowed just 3
ER over his last 3 starts (16 IP) thanks to a .401 OPS allowed
Blake Taylor – 3 IP, H, BB, 3 SO, 41 Pitches (26 Strikes), 5
GO: 1 FO; Made his first appearance for

short-season ball after experiencing left forearm tightness in XST
Andrew Church – 3 IP, H, 4 SO, 36 Pitches (24 Strikes), 3

(12 IP) thanks to a .488 OPS allowed
Christian Montgomery – 2 G, 2.2 IP, H, BB, 7 SO; He’s struck out 16 of 30 batters so far, so
it might not be long until Savannah has a new reliever
Alex Palsha – 3 G, 3 IP, BB, 3 SO; Brooklyn’s closer has allowed just 3 hits in 11.1 IP so far
Carlos Valdez – 2 G, 2.2 IP, 2 H, 4 SO; After a rough start to 2015 with Savannah, Valdez is back to dominating
with Brooklyn now that their season has begun
