Recap
The
B-Mets had an outburst of singles in Portland Friday night, hitting 16 total as
they beat the Sea Dogs 7-3 in the opener of a 4-game series. John Gant made his
second start for Binghamton since returning from St. Lucie, and he would allow
a few runs early, but retired 10 of the final 12 Portland batters before
handing the ball to the pen. Adam Kolarek and Matt Koch were nearly perfect for
Bingahmton out of the pen, with a pair of leadoff singles against Koch leading
to nothing for Portland.
Gant
would walk he first batter of the game on 4 pitches, and then Portland took a
1-0 lead on an RBI single into RF two batters later. A fielding error from
Gavin Cecchini opened the door for another Portland run in the 2nd
inning, as the next two Sea Dogs batters would single him around, but then
Cecchini made up for it with a nice play to finish the frame (see below for
both). Gant would allow a two out RBI triple to Henry Ramos in the 3rd
inning for Portland’s third run of the game, but then he finished strong over
his final 3 innings. As you can see from the angle’s below, it’s tough to get a
good read on the pitches from the MiLB.tv angel used, but Gant induced a few
ugly swings with his breaking ball. Three walks in the game is not great, but he
was able to work through them better in this start than his earlier season
starts with Binghamton.
This
series continues Saturday evening at 6:00 PM, with Robert Gsellman scheduled to
pitch for Binghamton.
Scoring Highlights
Gavin
Cecchini and Michael Conforto both picked up their first of 3 singles in the 1st
inning Friday night, but the B-Mets couldn’t get them in.
Josh
and Aderlin Rodriguez led off the 2nd inning with back-to-back
singles, and then both scored on an RBI double from Xorge Carrillo. After Eudy
Pina reached on an infield single, Cecchini knocked an RBI single into CF.
Cecchini would come around to score in the frame on Conforto’s first RBI hit.
Brandon
Nimmo sparked the 3rd inning rally with a single to LF, and then the
Rodriguez’s followed with two more singles – Nimmo would score on the play
after an E9. After a single from Carrillo loaded the bases in the inning, Eudy
Pina picked up his RBI with a sac fly to LF.
Cecchini
hit a two out triple in the 5th, and then Conforto knocked him home
two batters later.
With
one out in the 7th, Pina picked up his second single, and Cecchini
picked up his fourth hit of the game.
Bonus Defense
Gavin
Cecchini committed his 20th error of the season in the 2nd
inning, but he also made a nice pick on the grounder to finish the frame, among
several good plays in the game.
Josh
Rodriguez started a nice 5-4-3 double play after a leadoff single in the 8th.
Xorge
Carrillo takes a smart, patient approach to this chopper in front of the plate, knowing
he’s got time to make the play.
