Recap
The
B-Mets got some big offensive performances to back an excellent start from Seth
Lugo, and they easily won the opener against New Britain. Although he’d walk
two, Lugo had good command Tuesday, leading to a lot of weak contact induced.
The B-Mets jumped ahead on a Xorge Carrillo homerun in the 2nd, and
then kept adding on after that, which you can read more about in the scoring
highlights section below. Matt Koch looked during his two innings in relief of
Lugo, and then Akeel Morris made the Rock Cats batters looks bad in the 9th,
holding onto the win in a no pressure situation after a turbulent few weeks.
After a great start to the season
(1.93 ERA/.638 OPS allowed, 9.4% Swinging strike rate over his first 6 starts),
Lugo would struggle over his next 6 starts (6.42 ERA/.828 OPS, 5.6% Swinging
strike rate), but he’s now thrown 2 great starts in a row (13 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 2
BB, 12 SO, 10.6% swinging strike rate), so hopefully this is a sign that he’s
made the necessary adjustments for continued success moving forward. Per the
Binghamton announcers, he hit between 89 and 94 MPH on the stadium gun during
this start, sitting mostly in the low-90’s. New Britain picked up a double
against Lugo in the 3rd, and a single off him in the 4th,
but Lugo worked around both hits. He also worked around two errors in the field
behind him, but he also got a pair of nice plays from Gavin Cecchini behind
him.
This series continues Wednesday night
at 6:35 PM, with Gabriel Ynoa scheduled to pitch for the B-Mets.
Scoring Highlights
Xorge
Carrillo put the games first run on the board with a sole blast in the 2nd
inning.
Brandon Nimmo had a big night, and he got the 4th inning rally started with an infield single. Carrillo would drive him home with an RBI double 3 batters later, and then Jared King followed with a two run double to make this a 4-0 game.
Gavin Cecchini led off the 5th inning with a single into RF, and then came around to score on an RBI single into CF from Nimmo.
Nimmo hit a one out single (on 94 MPH inside heat) to move L.J. Mazzilli (walk) to 3B in the 7th inning, and then they both scored on a double from Josh Rodriguez.
Cecchini had two other singles during this game.
Bonus Defense
Gavin
Cecchini made a pair of nice plays in the field behind Seth Lugo.
