Recap
Darin
Gorski came into Wednesday night’s start on a roll – he had a 1.82 ERA over his
previous 4 starts – but was smacked around by Fresno in the 2nd and
4th innings, which left the 51s in a hole too big to climb out of.
The 51s offense managed only one hit over the first 5 innings, struggling to
make hard contact against Grizllies starter Mike Hauschild, who had one of his
best starts of the season. Even after Gorski left, the Grizzlies kept adding on
against the Las Vegas pen, with Scott Rice the only 51s pitcher who had a
scoreless outing in this game.
Gorski
started his night by striking out the side in the 1st inning, so it
looked like he’d keep on rolling Wednesday night. But then the first 3 Fresno batters
reached against him in the 2nd, and all 3 would come around to
score. Gorski has a track record of running into one big inning during his
starts, so when he retired 9 of the next 10 batters, it looked like he would be
able to bounce back from the 2nd to give Las Vegas some length. But
then Robbie Grossman hit a one out solo homerun against Gorski in the 5th,
and the Grizzlies would add 3 more runs on back-to-back triples with two outs. The
51s pen was plenty rested after Matthew Bowman’s complete
game shutout Tuesday night, so the extra work was no problem, but I’m sure
Wally Backman was hoping for better results from his crew.
Jayce
Boyd doubled Dilson Herrera (walk) to 3B in the 6th, and Herrera
came home on an RBI groundout to get the 51s on the scoreboard. Boyd was
playing in the field for the first time since 7/4, and he’d add an RBI double
to bring home Dilson from 1B in the 8th inning. The 51s would load
the bases with 0 outs in the 9th, and 2 runs would come home, but it
was far too little too late.
This
series wraps up Thursday night at 10:05 PM with Dillon Gee (3-1, 6.59 ERA)
scheduled to pitch for the Las Vegas 51s.
New space probe concept uses Jupiter's winds to stay aloft & to generate power. So clever. http://t.co/vB3OFholSX pic.twitter.com/LGDzRVDR91
