Recap
After
being shutout in game one, the Las Vegas bats didn’t really wake up for game two
of their double-header Tuesday night, but they rode an excellent start from
Darin Gorski to a split. Gorski would allow just an unearned over his 6
sparkling innings, and he reached a double-digit strikeout total for the fifth
time in 128 minor league games (his first time doing it since 6/19/2014). The
51s would finally put a rally together in the 3rd inning, which was
the only inning that they’d score in during either game Tuesday night. Zack
Thornton came in to close things out in the 7th and picked up his
first save of the year while extending his scoreless streak to 8 straight
appearances.
Gorski
had a great changeup working for him Tuesday night, and it led to one of the
best performances of his career. He retired the first 3 Isotopes batters of the
game, but then Angelys Nina reached on a single to LF. Nina would get himself
into scoring position by stealing 2B as Gorski struck out Roger Bernadina. Nina
then broke for 3B with Abel Baker batting and Dan Rohlfing’s throw bounced into
LF, which allowed Nina to come around and score the only Isotopes run of game
two. After the single, Gorski struck out 5 straight Albuquerque batters before
he induced a pop out from Trevor Story to break the streak – aw shucks, only a pop out on the infield. After
Christian Adames picked up the ‘topes second hit of the game, Gorski struck out
Kyle Parker swinging for his seventh K of the game. Nina then sent a fly ball
towards deep left-center field and Cory Vaughn laid out to make “an absolutely
spectacular catch… a simply sensational play by Cory Vaughn… laying out for
one, completely outstretched, and a fabulous catch in the deep recesses of left
center field” (Russ Langer’s calls of the play). Gorski would finish his night
with 3 strikeouts in the 5th, and then 3 fly outs induced in the 6th. He has now allowed just 2 runs on 10 hits over his last 13 IP, with
13 K: 1 BB over the 2 starts.
The
51s broke through for 3 in the 4th, with a leadoff single from Dilson
Herrera sparking the rally. Herrera would steal 2B and then score on a single
from Brandon Allen to tie the game. Alex Castellanos gave Las Vegas all of the
insurance they would get (and need) when he followed with his 15th homerun
of the year, another no-doubter, this one to left-center field #PROMOAT.
The
51s welcome Salt Lake into town Wednesday night, with Rainy Lara scheduled to
pitch for Las Vegas at 10:05 PM.
