Recap
The
B-Mets jumped ahead early and then coasted to an easy win over the Sea Dogs on
the right arm of Robert Gsellman. Gsellman wasn’t overwhelming the Portland
batters with swing-and-miss stuff, but they couldn’t square the ball up well
off of him, which led to a lot of work for Gavin Cecchini (see below the
scoring highlights section). After Gsellman worked 7 strong innings, Dario
Alvarez and Josh Smoker came in from the pen to finish things off, with the
game ending on 97 MPH heat from Smoker.
Gsellman
had good control throughout the start Saturday, and it seemed like he was
relying on a heavy diet of fastballs and changeups – it’s a tough angle for
pitch identification in Portland, but his big breaking curve is often
identifiable. He only allowed more than one base runner in an inning during the
6th, and of the 6 hits allowed, only one went for extra bases. The triple
he allowed came with one out in the 5th inning, and then the Sea
Dogs picked up their only run of the game with an RBI groundout.
The
series continues Sunday afternoon at 1:05 PM, with Seth Lugo scheduled to pitch
for Binghamton.
Scoring Highlights
After
Gavin Cecchini and L.J. Mazzilli led off the game with walks, Joe Benson
launched a 3R-HR during his first AB within the organization. Dustin Lawley
would follow with a solo blast of his own.
Benson
would reach on a one out single in the 6th, and then Xorge Carrillo
doubled him home – Carrillo’s fourth XBH since 7/7. Jared King and Eudy Pina
would follow with singles to bring Carrillo around for a 6-1 lead.
Bonus Defense
Gavin
Cecchini was having a great night until the 9th inning, when he was
credited with his 21st error of the season, although I think
improperly so: first, the throw was catchable, so that should be an E3, but
more importantly, the runner was awarded 2B even though the ball stayed in play
– even the announcers were confused why the runner was awarded 2B.
The
B-Mets turned this double play to end the 7th, with L.J. Mazzilli
doing a good job of making the turn despite a wide throw.
