Recap

The B-Mets hot pitching continued Saturday night against Trenton, with Robert Gsellman turning in one of his best performances since joining Binghamton, and Michael Conforto provided the thump with his fifth homerun since his promotion to AA. Gsellman cruised through most of the start, only running into trouble in the 4th inning after Gavin Cecchini threw the potential third out wide of 2B and into RF for his first error of the night. The B-Mets jumped out in front during the 3rd inning thanks to an RBI single from L.J. Mazzilli, and then back on top in the 5th inning when Michael Conforto yanked a two run shot over the RF wall (see below). Adam Kolarek and Jon Velasquez combined for two scoreless innings in relief of Gsellman, with Velasquez picking up his 13th save of the year for the B-Mets, striking out Cito Culver to end the game.
Gsellman did not have great control throughout the start, as you can see in Table 1 below, but he wasn’t missing where the Thunder could punish him, and he induced a high rate of groundballs and popups. After working quickly through the first 3.2 IP, Gsellman found himself in trouble for the first time after the Cecchini error in the 4th inning (see below). He’d allow a two run double and walk before inducing a comebacker to end the frame. Cecchini committed another error behind him that allowed a runner to reach 3B in the 7th inning, but Nimmo prevented the tying run from coming home with a strong throw, although he had plenty of help from catcher Albert Cordero on the play.
This series wraps up Sunday afternoon at 1:00 PM, with Rainy Lara scheduled to pitch for the B-Mets.

Scoring Highlights

Gavin Cecchini and Michael Conforto picked up singles in the 1st inning, but L.J. Mazzilli grounded into a double play between them.

After Cecchini reached on a throwing error from Tony Renda in the 3rd inning, L.J. Mazzilli singled him home to give the B-Mets a 1-0 lead.

Brandon Nimmo led off the 4th with a single to LF.

Conforto launched a two run homerun with two outs in the 5th, giving the B-Mets the 3-2 lead they would win by.

Bonus Defense

Gavin Cecchini made several fine plays Saturday night, but all fans will notice is the two throwing errors, neither of which came on throws to 1B.

Error #1

Error #2

Michael Conforto made a nice play in the LF corner, but Brandon Nimmo and Alberto Cordero combined for the play of the night to end the 7th. After Cecchini’s second error put a runner on 3B with one out, Eddy Rodriguez hit a fly ball to Nimmo for a potential sac fly, and the following happened.
