Recap
The
51s apparently scratched Logan Verrett shortly before their game Friday night,
likely so he can head to the Mets while Jon Niese is on paternity leave, and
replacement starter Tyler Pill struggled mightily in his absence. Pill couldn’t
get out of the 1st inning, allowing 7 runs on 3 walks, a single, and
4 doubles before Cody Satterwhite came in to finish the frame. Satterwhite
struck out the first 4 batters that he’d face, so Wally let him bat for himself
(he’d strike out in his first pro AB) and come out for the 3rd,
which did not go well for Cody. The 51s offense got off to a slow start,
managing only a double from Brandon Allen over the first 4 innings before
finally breaking through for two runs in the 5th (see below for
highlights and details). Unfortunately, this game was well out of reach by
then, and Las Vegas had no other rallies left in them. Because it was such a blowout, Wally used catcher Nelfi Zapata to pitch the 8th for Las Vegas, and Zapata throw a 1-2-3
inning before picking up a single int he 9th – oddly, both Mets minors’ games on MiLB.tv Friday night featured a position
player pitching.
This
series continues in Reno Saturday night at 10:05 PM, with Luis Cessa (0-2, 9.45
ERA) scheduled to pitch for Las Vegas.
The
51s scored both of their runs in the 5th inning when T.J. Rivera
doubled home Wilfredo Tovar (single) and Dilson Herrera (walk). Jayce Boyd had
singled in the inning, but he was thrown out trying to extend his hit into a
double.
