Recap
It
took nearly two full regulation games, but the B-Mets outlasted Trenton for a
2-1 win Friday night. Binghamton starter Robert Gsellman had his worm-killing
sinker working to its peak effect, inducing 15 groundouts, and another pair of
groundballs that went for singles, from the 27 total batters that he faced in
this game – that’s a 71% groundball rate on balls in play. Brock Peterson gave
the B-Mets a 1-0 lead with a solo blast in the 2nd inning (see below
for the few offensive highlights), but the Thunder would scratch out a run
against Gsellman in the 7th, and then neither team scored again
until the 17th. Both pens were great, but Trenton ran out of
relievers in the 15th and Binghamton managed only 1 run against 2.1
IP of position player pitching. But they did manage that one run, and then Jon
Velasquez came in to shut the door in the bottom of the 17th.
Gsellman
didn’t miss many bats Friday night, but he induced a lot of weak and medium
contact, which results in few hits since most of it was pounded into the ground
anyway. He allowed a single in the 2nd and 3rd innings,
but then had a streak of 11 straight retired. That streak was ended when the
Thunder hit back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners in the 7th,
and then brought the tying run home with an RBI groundout. He’d be removed with
a runner on 2B in the 8th, and Josh Smoker taking over from the pen.
Smoker retired both runners in the
8th, but couldn’t work his way through the 9th. Paul
Sewald finished the 9th and worked a perfect 10th, and
then Matt Koch, Adam Kolarek, and Beck Wheeler worked a pair of scoreless
innings each. The B-Mets had few threats throughout the game, but they did waste
a bases load opportunity in their first PA against a position player, which
came during the 15th inning. They finally connected for a run when
Joe Benson lined a one out single into CF with the bases loaded and 0 outs in
the 17th. They’d fail to add any more runs, but that was more than
enough for a fresh Jon Velasquez (the B-Mets pen is kind of stacked right now,
everyone has been killing it for 6+ weeks).
This series continues Saturday night
at 7:00 PM, with Rainy Lara (5-2, 3.60 ERA) scheduled to pitch for the B-Mets.
Brock
Peterson hit a solo blast leading off the 2nd inning for the B-Mets,
and then their bats got cold.
Brandon
Nimmo added a pair of singles while the B-Mets weren’t scoring.

With a position player on the mound and throwing in the mid-60’s, the B-Mets loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a HBP in the 17th. Joe Benson followed with an RBI single, but then a different position player came in from RF and escaped the bases loaded jam.
Bonus Defense
Robert
Gsellman and the B-Mets staff kept the infield busy Friday night, and Gavin
Cecchini was perfect in the field, but L.J. Mazzilli committed a missed catch
error in the 8th.
