Recap
The
51s and Aces played a tight back-and-forth battle Saturday night, but Reno
would strike last, charging ahead thanks to a three run 8th inning.
Las Vegas jumped ahead three times over the first four innings, but Cessa
couldn’t hold any of those leads, as his AAA struggles continued. The 51s
offense had a solid attack, getting two more bombs from Travis Taijeron (he
leads the team with 17), but going only 2-9 with RISP. John Church worked a
perfect 7th in relief of Cessa, but then struggled in the 8th,
eventually giving way to Chase Huchingson. Huch came into a tie game, but
allowed both inherited runners to score, and the Aces a comfortable three run
lead. The 51s would get two runners on with one out in the 9th to
bring the tying runs to the plate, but Brooks Conrad and Zach Lutz struck out
swinging to end the game.
The
Reno Aces hit Cessa pretty hard Saturday night, with four of the seven hits
against him going for extra bases (two homeruns and two doubles). The 51s
jumped ahead with a run in the 1st (see below for details and
highlights), but then Nick Evans launched a solo blast off Cessa with two outs
in bottom of the 1st inning to tie the game. After Las Vegas took
another lead in the top of the 2nd inning, Danny Worth launched a
two run bomb to RF in the 2nd that gave the Aces their first lead. Cessa
would retire 8 of the next 9 Reno batters as the 51s took a 4-3 lead, but then
three straight hits with one out in the 5th allowed Reno to regain
the lead again.
Wally
Backman inserted Cory Vaughn into the 2-hole for Las Vegas, and he had a big
game at the plate in response, with all of his hits coming at big moments – his
1st inning single moved Dislon to 3B, he tied the game with an RBI
single in the 7th, and his double in the 9th put runners
on 2B and 3B with one out, although the 51s couldn’t tie it. After Vaughn’s RBI
single got Cessa off the hook in the 7th, this game was back to
square one, but the Aces would strike last with 3 in the 8th off of
Church and Huch. With two outs in the frame, Peter O’ Brien and Danny Worth
reached on consecutive singles, so Wally went to Huchingson, but Huch would allow
a pair of singles and a wild pitch after coming in, and three Reno runs crossed
the plate.
This
series continues Sunday night at 9 PM, with Matthew Bowman (7-10, 5.05 ERA)
scheduled to pitch for the 51s.
Dilson
Herrera and Cory Vaughn started the game with consecutive singles for the 51s,
but Las Vegas had to settle for just one run in the inning, as Dilson came home
on a groundball double play from Conrad.
Travis
Taijeron led off the 2nd inning with his first homerun of the game.
Brandon
Allen started the 4th inning with a double lined into RF, and then
Taijeron gave Las Vegas their third lead of the night with his second bomb of
the game.
Wilfredo
Tovar led off the 7th inning with a single, moved to 2B on a single
from pinch-hitting Johnny Monell, stole 3B, and then came home on an infield
single from Cory Vaughn.
