Recap
The
51s offense had one of those nights when everyone hits, which led to an easy
win in their series opener against Salt Lake Wednesday night. Darrell Ceciliani
would be the only Las Vegas batter not to record a hit during the offensive
explosion, with four 51s player providing multiple hits Wednesday night, and 9
of 14 hits going for extra bases. Las Vegas starter Rainy Lara was smacked
around over the first 4 innings, but then the 51s bullpen did a great job of
shutting the Bees offense down behind him. John Church would allow a solo
homerun to Gary Brown leading off the 6th, which temporarily left
this a one-run game, but then Las Vegas pulled away with two runs in both the 6th
and 7th innings. Scott Rice, Cody Satterwhite, and Vic Black
finished the game off by contributing a scoreless inning of relief each.
Lara
was in trouble during each inning on the mound, only keeping the Bees scoreless
during the 1st inning. Alex Yarbrough connected for a homerun
against Lara leading off the 2nd inning to put Salt Lake up 1-0.
They’d pick up a double off of Lara in both the 3rd and 4th
innings, and both times the runner would come home to score.
Jayce
Boyd returned to the lineup Wednesday day and sparked the 2nd inning
rally for Las Vegas with a leadoff single. Four of the next five batters would
double (Taijeron, Vaughn, Rohlfing, and Dilson), and suddenly Las Vegas had a
4-1 lead. Rohlfing and Tovar would hit back-to-back doubles for a run in the 4th
inning, and then Tovar would steal 3B and come home on a wild pitch. Travis
Taijeron led off the 7th inning with his 15th homerun of
the year, launching a no-doubter to left center field that really impressed
announcer Russ Langer. Vaughn and Dilson would add their second doubles of the
night for another run in the frame, putting this game practically out of hand –
no PCL lead is safe.
This
series continues Thursday night with a double-header scheduled for 8:05 PM. The
51s are expected to send Luis Cessa to the mound for his second PCL start in
the opener, and Logan Verrett to the mound in the nightcap.
