Recap
The
B-Mets won their third straight game against the first-place Trenton Thunder
Sunday afternoon, which pulled them to just a half of a game out of first place
in the Eastern division of the Eastern League – the top four teams are within
1.5 games of each other. Rainy Lara made a mostly successful return to the
B-Mets, going 7 strong, although he’d allow 2 bombs in the game. Gavin Cecchini
and L.J. Mazzilli led the way on offense, picking up four hits apiece, although
the B-Mets got big contributions from Michael Conforto, Josh Rodriguez and
Xorge Carrillo as well. Akeel Morris and Josh Smoker showed off some impressive
stuff during the final two innings in relief of Lara, although they’d also give
up some loud contact, with Smoker allowing a run for the first time since June
15 (he had gone 10 scoreless, with 4 hits allowed and 14 K: 1 BB).
Lara’s
time with Las Vegas was mixed, but he showed that he’s capable of having
success as a starter in the PCL. He worked through the Trenton lineup rather
quickly, allowing all 3 runs in a span of 4 batters. With two outs in the 2nd,
Taylor Dugas doubled to RF and Francisco Arcia followed with a HR to RF, and
then Cito Culver hit a leadoff homerun in the 3rd inning. The only
other Trenton base runner against Lara Sunday came with one out in the 7th,
but then Lara’s night ended with a 1-6-3 double play.
After
the Thunder jumped ahead 3-1 in the 3rd, the B-Mets would score the
next 8 runs in a row, giving the pen a comfortable lead by the 9th (see
below for the highlights!). The B-Mets start a 7-game road trip Monday by
heading to New Britain, with Seth Lugo scheduled to pitch in the opener at 7:05
PM.
Scoring Highlights
L.J.
Mazzilli got his big day at the plate started with a single in the 1st
inning, but he’d be stranded at 2B.
With
two outs and two on in the 2nd inning (both from walks), Gavin
Cecchini singled home Joe Benson to cut the Trenton lead to 2-1.
Xorge
Carrillo launched his fifth homerun of the year leading off the 4th
inning. Mazzilli and Michael Conforto would add two out singles later in the
frame.
Brandon
Nimmo led off the 5th inning with a single to CF, went to 3B on a
double from Josh Rodriguez, and they’d both score in frame, with Cecchini
knocking in J Rod.
Conforto
led off the 6th inning with a standup triple off the wall, and J Rod
came through with the two out single to bring him home.
With
two outs in the 7th inning, Cecchini hit his seventh homerun of the
year. Mazzilli followed with a ground-rule double, and then the Thunder
intentionally walked Conforto, but they’d again be stranded on 1B and 2B.
With
two on (both from walks) and two outs in the 8th, Gilbert Gomez,
Cecchini, and Mazzilli would hit consecutive RBI singles to extend the lead to
6-3.
Bonus Defense
Michael
Conforto nearly made a great diving catch on this play in left center field.
Daily
Gavin Cecchini coverage.
Pitcher Coverage
Josh Smoker was sitting mid-90’s in
the 9th inning, reaching as high as 98 MPH with his fastball.
