Recapish
Luis
Guillorme dazzled in the field and hit his first homerun of the season to lead
Binghamton to a 7-4 win Saturday night in Harrisburg. With the victory, the
Ponies secure a fourth straight series win, and they have a chance to sweep
behind Robert Gsellman and their reliable bullpen Sunday. Both starters work
quickly and efficiently Saturday, but the Senators gained a 4-2 edge against
Marcos Molina when Drew Ward hit a grand slam with two outs in the 6th.
The Ponies charged right back ahead to give their starter his first Double-A
win of the season.
Former
Clemson standout Matthew Crownover started his night with a strikeout and seven
straight retired, but it was the only strikeout he’d get in a very effective
six-inning stint that lasted 69 pitches. The lefty tops out in the low-90’s,
but his changeup is very effective, and his curve has come along some since I
saw him a few times during his final season with Clemson.
Marcos
Molina had a similarly efficient approach to his start, and he started his
outing with five scoreless frames on 50 pitches. He finished with just one
strikeout, but he induced twelve groundouts, most of which went to his
shortstop. Luis Guillorme had nine balls hit his way plus he was the turn on
two double play attempts (they went one-for-two on those). One of the two hits
off Molina through the first five innings was a Victor Robles double in the 3rd.
After
starting 0-7 against Crownover, the Ponies connected on four straight hits
against him in the 3rd. L.J. Mazzilli and Champ Stuart doubles
sandwiched a Marcos Molina single, and then Luis Guillorme followed with an RBI
single into CF. Not to MMQB, I understand being safe with a runner on third and
less than two outs, but I felt 80-grade speed Champ Stuart should’ve been sent.
Ponies couldn’t get him home because Juan Lagares followed with a double play
grounder to end the frame.
Matt
Oberste (4th) and David Thompson (5th) added singles
against Crownover.
Robles
got the Senators big 6th started with a leadoff single, but he was erased
on a ridiculous fielder’s choice play from Luis Guillorme. Harrisburg then
loaded the bases with one out on two more singles, which left things up to Dan
Gamache and Drew Ward, who were 0-4 with four groundouts (one is incorrectly
listed as a lineout on the MiLB log). Both hit fly balls, but while Gamache’s
fly ball fell innocently into Kevin Taylor’s glove, Ward’s fly ball landed over
the wall and turned this game upside down. The Ponies 2-0 lead was suddenly a
4-2 deficit.
The
Senators went to their bullpen for the 7th and the Ponies went to
work against reliever Tim Collins. They loaded the bases on two walks and a
Tomas Nido single, but they had two outs at that point, so it was up to the top
of the lineup to come through. The Champ provided the first punch with a
game-tying double to left, and then Guillorme landed the knockout blow: an oppo
taco three run homer off the glove of the left fielder.
Tim
Peterson came out of the Binghamton pen for Marcos Molina in the Ponies 7th
and he retired six in a row after allowing a leadoff single.
Champ
Stuart added a single in the 9th.
Cory
Burns worked a scoreless 9th to close things out and picked up his
16th save of the year. Just like Peterson, Burns allowed a leadoff
hit in the frame, but he still faced the minimum in the frame because the
Ponies turned a double play behind him.
Looking
ahead, the Ponies will send rehabbing Robert Gsellman to the hill Sunday with a
chance to sweep.
