Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s and the Albuquerque Isotopes wrapped up their series with a PCL
classic Tuesday afternoon, combining to score in 12 of the 18 frames they
played, and the 51s came out on top 12-9. The win pushed Las Vegas to 15-18 and
allowed them to salvage a game from this series against a division rival. Every
51s position player had a hit except Phil Evans, and only Jayce Boyd finished
with just one hit.
Las
Vegas wasted little time jumping ahead and padding their lead Tuesday afternoon,
jumping ahead 2-0 in the top half of the 1st, and leading 7-2 after
the 2nd. Brandon Nimmo started the game with an extra base hit for
the second straight game – this after the Mets made a point of saying he
stopped his rehab over the weekend due to a sore knee. Nimmo doubled but was
stranded at second base until Dominic Smith doubled him home with two outs.
Josh Rodriguez followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0.
Sean
Gilmartin made the start for Las Vegas and was on a limited pitch count. He
made a throwing error on the first play of the game, which opened the door for
red-hot Raimel Tapia to come around and score the Isotopes first run of the
game.
Jayce
Boyd sparked the 51s big rally in the 2nd inning with a leadoff
single. Jeff Glenn advanced Boyd to third base with a single of his own, and
then went to second base on a wild pitch. Gilmartin and Nimmo followed with RBI
singles to make it four straight hits to start the frame, but the combo was
broken when Desmond Jennings took a walk to load the bases. Amed Rosario was
due up next and he singled home a pair to make it a 6-1 game, but was then
thrown out at second base on the play. Smith then made it two RBI doubles in
two innings to cap the scoring in the frame.
The
Isotopes went 3-5 with a pair of doubles against Gilmartin in the 2nd
inning, but a fortunately timed 3-6-3 double play helped him escape the frame
with just one run allowed.
Smith
made it 3-3 when he led off the 5th with a single, and then came
around to score on a Jeff Glenn single three batters later.
Tapia
and Cristhian Adames hit back-to-back doubles against Gilmartin in the 5th,
effectively knocking him out, as Kevin McGowan finished the frame for him after he faced one last batter.
Jennings
singled and advanced into scoring position on a throwing error from shortstop
Daniel Castro in the 6th. Smith brought him two batters later with
his fourth hit of the game, and then Josh Rodriguez made it an 11-3 lead with a
two run blast to CF.
Brandon
Nimmo reached on an error with two outs in the 7th inning and came
home two batters later when Amed Rosario singled into CF.
The
Isotopes got a run back against McGowan in both the 6th and 7th
innings. Derrik Gibson homered in the 6th and Noel Cuevas singled
home Tapia to make it 12-5 after 7.
Tapia
picked up his fourth hit of the game for Albuquerque with two outs in the 8th
inning, bringing home two runs against Ben Rowen.
Chase
Bradford tried to calm down the Isotopes bats in the 9th, but they
still scratched out another pair of runs before he could put an end to this PCL
classic - they got some help when Rosario booted a grounder. After a rough series in Albuquerque, the 51s come home and have a day
off before the Omaha Storm Chasers come into town. Tyler Pill (2-0, 0.33 ERA)
is scheduled to make the 10:05 PM start for Las Vegas Wednesday night at
Cashman, as the 51s continue their climb back to .500.
Defensive Highlights
Sean Gilmartin pulled the old elastic string attached to the ball and his glove routine in the fifth, and no one caught on! (Nice play!)
Brandon Nimmo made a nice diving catch in CF during the seventh.
