Recapish
The
Brooklyn Cyclones put on a rare power display to even their series in West
Virginia Tuesday, launching three homers en route to a 9-4 win over the Black
Bears. The Cyclones came in with nine homeruns hit all season, so hitting three
in one day was certainly unexpected. Brooklyn starter Chris Viall was making
his first start of the season, so he was limited to just three innings and the
Bears bats initially came alive against the Brooklyn pen. Fortunately for
Brooklyn, Nicolas Debora came in and shut the door for 3.1 IP to earn a save.
Brooklyn
jumped ahead big early thanks to a pair of homers over the first two innings.
Leon Byrd started the game with a single, although he’d be replaced on the
bases after a fielder’s choice. Walter Rasquin took his spot and quickly stole
two bases, pushing his season total to 19. Quinn Brodey followed with his
second homer of the NYPL season to make this a 2-0 game.
Jose
Miguel Medina connected on his first of two hits in the 3rd, but he
was caught stealing both times he got on base.
Chris
Viall is listed at 6’9, so the first question we have to ask is: how well can
he repeat his mechanics? He’s 21 but doesn’t have much pro experience, so it’s
not too surprising that this part of his game still needs work. Per Twitter, Steve Sypa
suggested his control issues might stem from his plant foot, and I would
believe that – it seemed like he wasn’t always driving through the plant foot,
so he wasn’t always finishing strong, and that caused him to miss wildly at times.
When right, Viall was a groundball machine with stuff way too good for the
NYPL.
Viall
retired the first six in a row, striking out three of those Bears: Deon
Stafford, Jared Oliva, and Bligh Madris. He then walked the first two batters in
the 3rd and one eventually came around to score West Virginia’s
first run.
After
West Virginia made it 4-1, the Cyclones went right out there and got that run
back. Jeremy Vasquez reached on a strikeout/wild pitch to start the 4th,
advanced to second on a flare single for Carl Stajduhar, up to third on a Jose
Maria infield single, and then scored on a force out.
Lefty
Placido Torres took over for Viall in the 4th. The Mets 8th
round pick from last year had a nice debut for Kingsport in 2016 (26 K: 6 BB in
18.2 IP, 22 H), but he’s missed time this year with an apparent injury. This
was just his fourth appearance all season and it didn’t go so well. He allowed
a leadoff single and then a second runner reached on a fielder’s choice that
produced no outs. With runners on the corners and just one out, Lucas Tancas
launched a two-run double to center field that made this a 5-3 game and brought
Manager Edgardo Alfonzo out of the dugout. Perhaps sensing that a rare win was
slipping away, Fonzie made a quick pitching change and brought in Jake Simon to
finish the 4th.
At
6’2, Simon definitely isn’t oversized like Viall, but he does have issues with
repeating his delivery to find his right release point. Back to Steve Sypa on Twitter,
“Jake Simon’s slingy, ¾ slot with a sometimes tall/sometimes bent torso puts
his release point al over the place, causing control problems.” Still just 20,
Simon showed that his stuff plays in full season ball during his stint with
Columbia this year, now he just needs to fine-tune his mechanics for next
season.
Simon
struck out the first batter he saw before inducing a groundout to end the 4th
inning threat. He worked around a walk for a scoreless 5th, but then
had to be relieved with one in, one out, and the bases loaded after a couple
more walks in the 6th.
The
Cyclones kept adding on throughout the game. Rasquin started the 5th
with a double and then Medina singled him home. Sweet-swinging Jeremy Vasquez
connected on his hit in the frame too.
Franklin
Correa blasted a moon shot to left in the 6th. Correa later came up
with two on and two outs in the 8th and launched a bases clearing
double to the right field corner to cap the scoring.
After
Simon walked in a run during the 6th, Fonzie came out for another
pitching change, and this would be his last. Nicolas Debora took over and
really sped this game along. Debora has been in the system since 2012, is
already 23, and this is just his second season stateside, so it’s not clear
what his future can be. Still, he just keeps putting up nice stats: he’s up to
38 K: 10 BB with a 2.43 ERA in 29.2 IP this year, and 213 K: 57 BB with a 2.94
ERA in 223.1 IP for his career.
Debora
struck out Chris Sharpe with the bases loaded before getting Austin Meadows to
fly out and end the Bears 6th inning scoring threat. The only hit
against Debora came with one out in the 7th, and Dylan Busby ended
up on third in the frame, but Debora struck out the other three batters. He had
a streak of seven straight retired snapped when he was Stafford with two outs
in the 9th, but then he ended the game with a strikeout of Busby and
a fist pump.
Looking
ahead, the Cyclones turn to lefty Jose Carlos Medina (1-4, 3.64 ERA) Thursday
with a chance for a road series win over the Black Bears. Game time is
scheduled for 7:05 PM and the Bears will counter with Scooter Hightower (1-0,
2.52 ERA) on the mound.
