Recapish
51s
pitching coach Frank Viola recently said Ricky Knapp is someone he thinks is
capable of having a pretty
good second half and Knapp backed that up Thursday. He took a shutout into
the 7th as the 51s cruised to a 7-2 win to even their series with
Nashville. Las Vegas jumped ahead 4-0 before Knapp even took the mound, but then
he stole the show. He faced just two over the minimum through six before
running into some 7th inning trouble, but the 51s pen wrapped things
up from there.
Gavin
Cecchini got the 51s 1st inning rally started with a one out single
through the right side. He’d move up to second on an Amed Rosario single and
then they both came around to score on a Jayce Boyd double. The double was
Boyd’s twelfth and he was able to trot home when Xorge Carrillo followed with
his ninth double of the season. Cody Decker capped the scoring for the frame
with an RBI single to left field that brought home Carrillo.
Knapp
struck out two during a perfect 1st and then also faced the minimum
in the 2nd (thanks to a double play behind him), the 3rd,
and the 5th (thanks to another double play).
Brandon
Nimmo’s first hit of the game came during a scoreless 2nd inning.
Xorge
Carrillo started the Las Vegas 4th with a single, went to second on Decker’s
second hit of the game, but was then forced out before he could reach third.
Victor Cruzado was next and he loaded the bases for the top of the lineup with
a single into CF. Unfortunately, the 51s could only scratch out one run from
the situation on a groundout, but their 5-0 lead was not in jeopardy.
Decker
and Nimmo both singled for Las Vegas in the 6th, but Nimmo was
thrown out trying to extend his hit into a double.
Rosario
joined the multi-hit party with a single in the 7th, stole second
base (his 18th stolen base), and then came around to score on Travis
Taijeron’s 19th homer of the year.
Nashville
finally broke through in the 7th, and the Sounds rally started when Matt
Olson greeted Ricky Knapp with a double. Joey Wendle doubled Olson home two
batters later to end the shutout bid, and Ben Rowen would eventually have to
come in and finish the frame for Knapp.

Brandon
Nimmo made it a three-hit game when he singled in the 9th.
Looking
ahead, the 51s wrap up this series with Nashville and look for a split Friday
night behind Mitch Atkins.
