Recapish

P.J. Conlon turned in his third straight sparking performance of the second half as he led the Binghamton Rumble Ponies to a 1-0 win Friday night over New Hampshire. Conlon took a shutout into the 7th and the Binghamton bullpen preserved it. Working with just a 1-0 lead, the pen had little room for error, but Tyler Bashlor and Tim Peterson combined to shut the Cats down over the final two-plus innings.
Conlon chose to skip appearing in the Eastern League All-Star game this year so he could get some extra rest and it looks like it’s paying off. He’s now allowed just one run over 20 IP, with 16 K: 6 BB and 13 H allowed (.472 OPS) in the 2nd half.
The Cats put two runners on against Conlon in the 2nd, 3rd, and 7th innings, but they never got a runner to third base, and Conlon was as unflinching as ever when in trouble – if you subtract out the intentional walks, he’s doing better with runners on base for a second straight season

The Ponies managed just three hits, and Tomas Nido had two of them. His fist hit came with one out in the 2nd inning and David Thompson doubled him home two batters later. Nido’s second hit came in the 7th, and that was it for the Binghamton offense.

That 1-0 lead was in jeopardy after Conlon walked his third batter of the game in the 7th. The walk put two on with two outs, which prompted Manager Luis Rojas to make a pitching change. Flamethrower Tyler Bashlor came in, and as you can see in the section below, he was throwing gas. Bashlor struck out three of four batters faced, and the other batter was thrown out trying to steal after reaching on a walk. Walks are a concern with Bashlor (13.3% BB-rate this year), but he’s struck out more than 39% of batters faced while allowing less than a hit per inning so far in 2017, so he’s definitely someone to keep an eye on.

Bashlor handed the ball off to Tim Peterson for the 9th and Peterson worked a scoreless frame for his seventh save of the year. Peterson had a hiccup in his second of just two appearances with Las Vegas this year, but he’s been very consistent outside of that quick trip to the desert in mid-June.
Looking ahead, the Ponies will give the ball to Scarlyn Reyes Saturday and hope he can continue his strong second half with a start against New Hampshire. Reyes has been very effective since being given the opportunity of a spot start in late June, allowed just three runs on nine hits over 13.2 IP, with 11 K: 3 BB during that span of six appearances. He’s pitching well enough to get the look anyway, but the Mets may need to stretch Reyes out into a starter over the final month of the season because they are running short of healthy starters in the system.
