Recapish
Baseball
games end on a strikeout all of the time, it’s just that the team that goes
down swinging is almost always the loser. That wasn’t the case Monday night in
Charleston, as the River Dogs managed to pull out a walkoff win on the wildness
that followed a Matt Blackham strikeout of Donny Sands. This game had a little
of everything – plenty of strikeouts, some doubles, some triples, a small
middle infielder hitting a homerun – but it will be remembered for awhile
because of the way it ended.
Before
lefty Marty Anderson could take the mound for his SAL debut with Columbia, his
new teammates handed him a 2-0 lead. Andres Gimenez, who had a .314 average for
the month of July, started the game with a single, stole second, and then came
around to score on a Jacob Zanon triple. Zanon was also able to score on the
play, as Hoy Jun Park’s relay throw sailed into the stands.
Anderson
then took the mound and struck out three batters in the 1st,
starting with Park.
Overall,
it wasn’t a very good 1st inning for Park, but things went much
better in the 2nd. He came up with one on and one in, and he turned
a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead with his sixth homer of the season.
Jacob
Zanon doubled to start the Cola 4th, but he was stranded at third in
the frame. Ian Strom connected on his first hit of the game and stole second
base in the 5th, but the Fireflies couldn’t get him in either.
After
the homer, Anderson retired seven of the next nine batters (with a pair of
strikeouts), which took him through the 4th. He walked the first two
Dogs in the 5th and then hit Isiah Gilliam to load the bases, which
prompted a pitching change for Columbia. Keaton Aldridge took over and went to
work. He did allow one of the inherited runners to come home on a double play
grounder, but he retired all five batters he faced for two innings of work:
three groundouts, one pop out and his first SAL strikeout.
John
Franco’s kid J.J. started the 6th with his first Cola extra base
hit, a double down the LF line, but he was thrown out on a fielder’s choice in the
frame.
Gilliam
made his presence in RF known with a big inning defensively in the 7th.
He made a diving catch to rob Colby Woodmansee of a flare hit, and then he
threw out Luis Carpio trying to take third on Strom’s second hit of the game.
Joe
Zanghi relieved Aldridge with two scoreless innings, and he got some help
defensively in the 7th too.
Columbia
finally broke through again in the 8th to tie this game up. After
his nice catch in RF during the 7th, Arnaldo Berrios started the 8th
with a single and then came around to score on Andres Gimenez’ fourth triple of
the season. Dan Rizzie eventually knocked Gimenez in to make this a 4-4 game.
After
Zanghi came Matt Blackham, and he was firing bullets in the 9th. He
struck out just one batter, but five
of nine pitches thrown went for swinging strikes, and it was a very quick
inning.
Columbia
did manage a hit in the 10th, but the two out single from Dan Rizzie
led to nothing.
Blackham
stayed out for the 10th and found himself in a battle with Park, who
played a big role in this game early. Blackham ended up walking Park on a close
pitch that even the Charleston announcer thought was a strike after he saw the
replay, and that call played a huge role in setting up the winning run for
Charleston. Park was quickly bunted over to second, and then things got weird.
Donny Sands went down swinging, but
the pitch got away from Rizzie and Sands broke for first base (while Park broke
for third). It was going to be a close play at first, but even if Rizzie made a
perfect throw, Sands was only going to be the second out of the inning, and
Park was going to have a chance to score. If he could do it over, Rizzie would
probably throw the ball to his pitcher, in which case they might’ve caught Park
too far off the bag for an out anyway. But he didn’t throw to his pitcher, and
it wasn’t even a good throw to first, so Park was able to come diving home with
the winning run on a play that began with a strikeout.
Looking
ahead, the Fireflies will give the ball to Gabriel Llanes (4-9, 3.64 ERA) as
they try to get things going in the right direction with another crack at the
River Dogs Tuesday in Charleston – game time scheduled for 7:05 PM
