Recapish
After
falling behind 4-0 early, the Las Vegas 51s scored seven straight en route to a
7-4 win over El Paso Sunday night. The win puts them ahead two games to one in
the series, which gives them a chance for a rare 2017 road series win on
Monday. Mitch Atkins fell behind big early, but he’s a veteran, so he made his
adjustments quickly and put up four straight scoreless while his teammates
jumped ahead 6-4. Meanwhile, the Las Vegas pen bounced back from a rough first
two games of this series to put up two scoreless, which sealed the deal on the
51s 46th win of the season.
If
the 51s could redo the first three games of this series, they’d probably choose
not to pitch to Franchy Cordero. He’s done damage in all three games and put El
Paso up 3-0 in the 1st with his 16th homer of the season.
It was a weird start for Atkins overall, because the first three reached and
scored against Atkins, but then he tossed seven innings of one-run ball after
that, with 8 K: 1 BB and 7 H allowed during that span.
The
51s were held hitless over the first three innings, but an E6 from Chaase d’Arnaud
helped open the door for a big 4th. Matt Reynolds singled ahead of
the E6, and then Las Vegas connected on four straight one-out hits later in the
frame to tie things up at four. Jayce Boyd smacked a two-run double to right
field that got Las Vegas on the board. After a Cody Decker single put him on
third, Victor Cruzado connected on an RBI double to right field as well. The
51s added another run on a Jiovanni Mier single, but Cruzado was thrown out
trying to score on the play, which cut the rally short.
The
rally picked right back up in the 5th with a Gavin Cecchini single. Reynolds
doubled Cecchini to third and then Plawecki brought him home with a sac fly to give
the 51s their first lead at 5-4. Reynolds came home later in the frame on a
Boyd RBI single through the middle.
Atkins
allowed the 3rd inning run that put El Paso up 4-0, but mostly he
was just cruising after the first three batters. Ben Rowen took over for the
51s in the 8th and struck out the side on 14 pitches.
The
51s added an insurance run in the 9th on Jayce Boyd’s third hit of
the game. It was his second RBI double of the game, and Plawecki scored from
first on the play to make this a 7-4 game.
Rowen
retired one batter in the 9th before giving way to Alberto Baldonado.
Big Al faced two batters and both hit comebackers to him that he fielded
cleanly for the final two outs of the game.
Looking
ahead, the 51s have a chance to win this series Monday night behind Jonathan
Albaladejo.
