Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies had a chance to sweep the New Hampshire Fisher Cats
out of town Sunday night but blew a 2-0 lead late and then lost in extra
innings. Rehabbing Tommy Milone made the start for Binghamton and turned in
three scoreless frames that were typical Milone: he had guys off balance and
induced fly balls. Milone gave way to Marcos Molina, who turned in a
better-than-quality start in the piggyback outing, but Molina ended up giving
the lead away late. This game would go to extras, where newly acquired Drew
Smith made his Mets org. debut, but the Ponies defense let him down with an uncommon
error in the 11th, and that unearned run was the difference.
Lefty
Tommy Milone allowed four fly balls in the 1st and one fell in for a
double, but it all just amounted to a lot of running for Champ Stuart.
Matt
Oberste connected on the first Ponies hit of the game in the bottom of the 1st,
and it was also a double, but Binghamton couldn’t get him home.
Milone
struck out two in the 2nd and another in the 3rd, and
overall he just looked like a major leaguer getting his work in. I know he
doesn’t excite Mets fans like some other rehabbers might this month, but if he
stays healthy, Milone will probably get some work with the big league club down
the stretch.
David Thompson singled in the 2nd and Luis
Guillorme connected on his hit in the 3rd.
Marcos
Molina took over on the mound in the 4th and picked right up where
he had left off last week in Akron. He finished with nine strikeouts over six
scoreless last week, and began this outing with three strikeouts over three
perfect innings.
While
Molina was dealing, his teammates were working to get him a lead. David
Thompson took a HBP with one out in the 4th, stole second and then
came around to score on a Kevin Kaczmarski single, which made this a 1-0 game.
Thompson
was in the middle of things again in the 6th, when the Ponies
doubled their lead. Tomas Nido started the frame with a single, went to second
on Thompson’s single, and then came around to score on an E4.
Molina’s
perfect night came to an end in the 7th, when Anthony Alford greeted
him with a leadoff double. Harold Ramirez followed with an RBI single to cut
the lead in half. The Cats threatened for more in the frame but LJ Mazzilli
threw out Ramirez for the final out, as Ramirez was trying to reach third on a
single to right field.
The
Ponies got just two hits from Matt Oberste and a Gustavo Nunez single over
their final five chances, so they couldn’t scratch out any more runs.
Still,
Binghamton was up 2-1 heading to the 9th and Marcos Molina was left
out there to finish things off with a pitch count of just 63. But standing in
the way of a Ponies sweep was Anthony Alford, and he apparently has Marcos
Molina’s number. After doubling off Molina in the 7th, Alford took
him deep to tie the game with one out in the 9th. It took him 22
pitches total, but Molina was able to finish the 9th and keep New
Hampshire from taking the lead.
The
Mets acquired Drew Smith in the Lucas Duda trade and the righty made his org.
debut in the 10th. Smith was 94-95 mostly in this outing, topping
out at 96, though he’s reportedly been up to 99 this year. He worked a perfect
10th but ran into trouble after an E6 in the 11th. The error
put Harold Ramirez on third with less than two outs and the Cats were able to
get him home with a sac fly to take the lead.
Trailing
for the first time all game, the Ponies went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 11th.
Looking
ahead, The Ponies welcome Trenton to town for a three-game series before
heading to Harrisburg this weekend.
