Recapish
The
Brooklyn Cyclones let their rubber-match with Aberdeen slip away Tuesday night,
and then things just kept slipping, until they were down 9-1 when it was
finally over. At 13-28, it’s no secret the Cyclones have failed to win series
this year, and rubber-matches like this make it easy to see why. They had no
multi-hit efforts from the lineup and no zero-run efforts from the staff, they
had no hits with runners in scoring position and no extra base hits, they had
one runner caught stealing and left another seven on base, and they committed
two errors and unleashed two wild pitches. The lead may have been slowly built,
but the game felt over long before it was in doubt.
The
Cyclones had multiple hits in three different innings Tuesday, but they
couldn’t get a run home until an E5 opened the door in the 9th, when
they had zero hits. Edgardo Fermin and Quinn Brodey singled in the 1st;
Scott Manea and Franklin Correa singled in the 5th; Reed Gamache and
Carl Stajduhar singled in the 6th; and then Leon Byrd singled in the
8th.
He’s
23 in low-A ball, listed at 5’10, and he allowed three runs, which increased
his ERA to 10.24 this year, but Luis De Los Santos didn’t seem as bad as his current
line with Brooklyn would indicate – admittedly, this is without seeing the
stuff from a good angle or even having any velo info. He was signed as a
21-year old IFA two years ago and the Mets exposed him to Columbia last year,
so they must see something in the kid, but it’s not a background that commonly
succeeds.
De
Los Santos allowed a run on three singles in the 1st inning, another
run on two singles and an E2 in the 2nd inning, and then the third
run charged to him came home after he left in the 4th.
Conner
O’Neil took over for De Los Santos with two outs and a runner on first in the 4th
and had a rough outing. He allowed that inherited runner to come around and
score before he could get the third out of the 4th, and then
Aberdeen scratched out a run on a pair of singles against O’Neil in the 5th.
Sixth
round pick Marcel Renteria came out of the Brooklyn pen for the 6th but
the Iron Birds lineup would not let up. Renteria was charged with two runs
allowed in both the 6th and 7th innings, and Joe
Napolitano had to finish off the 7th for him.
Joey
Naps stayed out for the 8th and the Aberdeen lineup made it 7/8
frames with a run scored against him.
After
a very rough finale, the Cyclones head home to open a mid-week series with
Tri-City.
