Recapish
After
Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson recently mentioned that he would need to
see rehabbing starter Robert Gsellman pitching better before taking him off his
rehab, Gsellman responded by pitching significantly better. The young righty
responded to the challenge with six shutout innings for the Rumble Ponies on
Friday, striking out five in what was easily his best rehab start to date. His
outing came in game one of a double-header between the Rumble Ponies and Akron,
and a full-strength Gsellman probably finishes the complete game shutout, but
this was just his fourth game back, so he was still on a pitch limit. While
Gsellman was the star attraction, his teammates quietly put up six to easily
take the opener 6-1.
Kevin
Kaczmarski sparked a 1st inning rally with a one-out single to
center field. Kevin Taylor doubled him home two batters later, and then the
Ponies worked Taylor around on back-to-back singles from David Thompson and
Tomas Nido.
Gsellman
started his night with back-to-back strikeouts during a perfect 1st.
No one made it beyond second base against Gsellman, and Akron only managed
multiple base runners against him for a few pitches before one was caught
stealing in the 3rd. He retired nine in a row after that caught
stealing and then worked around a 6th inning single before
departing.
Patrick
Biondi and Kacz singled in the 2nd.
Kacz
stayed hot and connected for a two-run triple in the 4th, bringing
home both L.J. Mazzilli (HBP) and Luis Guillorme (BB) - unfortunately, somehow the MiLB.tv feed skipped over the hit.
The
Ponies added one more in the 6th to jump ahead 6-0. Luis Guillorme
connected on a one-out single, he then reached third after the next two coaxed
walks and came home on a Kevin Taylor sac fly.
Drew
Smith took over for Gsellman in the 7th to close things out, which
he did, although he couldn’t hold onto the shutout, as Yu-Cheng Chang took
Smith deep for his 21st bomb of the season to put Akron on the
board.
The
Ponies have Marcos Molina going in game two as they look for a double-header
sweep.
