Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies stormed ahead early Tuesday night but barely held on for an
11-10 win in game two against Charleston. Luis Carpio and Ian Strom led the
charge offensively as the Fireflies jumped out to an 11-0 lead through five,
but Cola starter Gabriel Llanes struggled in the 6th, which opened
the floodgates for Charleston. The River Dogs would score eight in the 6th
and two more in the 9th to make this a one run game, but new Cola
closer Matt Pobereyko was able to hold on for his second save of the season.
Before
the Charleston offensive explosion in the 6th, Gabriel Llanes was
actually having a very good outing. He walked two over the first five innings –
they’ve been a problem for him in the second half – but limited Charleston to
two singles and a double, and faced little trouble. The Dogs biggest threat
against Llanes over the first five innings came during the 3rd, when
they got a runner to third base with two outs. Llanes responded by striking out
three in a row and retiring seven of eight overall.
While
Llanes was cruising early, his teammates were building up a big lead, and
they’d need every run of it. They started the 2nd inning with three
straight hits: Natanael Ramos singled, Colby Woodmansee doubled him to third,
and then Ian Strom doubled them both home. Strom came around to score two
batters later on a Vinny Siena RBI single, and Jacob Zanon capped the scoring
in the frame with an RBI single to bring home Siena three batters after that.
Arnaldo Berrios reached on a strikeout/wild pitch in the frame and later came
home on a wild pitch.
Strom
got the 3rd inning rally started with his second double of the game,
and this time he was the one advancing Ramos (HBP) to third base. Berrios
reached on a single in this frame, and his single brought home both Ramos and
Strom to make it 7-0. Berrios stole second base in the frame but was able to
trot home on Luis Carpio’s first bomb of the season – it was Carpio’s first
homer since 8/11/14 in the DSL. Jacob Zanon and Dan Rizzie added singles in the
frame, but the Fireflies magic ran out after that.
Columbia
added that key eleventh insurance run in the 5th. Carpio got the frame
started with his third triple of the season, although he just missed a
two-homer night, and came around on Dan Rizzie’s fifth double since joining
Columbia.
Llanes
struck out Donny Sands with a runner on first base for the first out of the 6th,
but then everything went downhill for Columbia after that. Isiam Gilliam took
Llanes deep for the Dogs first runs of the game and then connected on a two run
double later in the frame. Carlos Vidal also hit a two run double during the
frame, as the River Dogs sent thirteen men to the plate and made this an 11-8
game. Adam Atkins came into a bases loaded situation and allowed all three
runners to score before finishing the frame with a strikeout. Only Dermis
Garcia failed to reach base at least once for Charleston during the frame, as
he finished 0-2.
The
Fireflies did manage three hits after the 5th, but couldn’t add on.
Ramos doubled and Ian Strom reached on an infield hit in the 8th, and
then Zanon singled in the 9th.
After
failing to strand any inherited base runners in the 6th, Adam Atkins
was sent back out for the 7th and made quick work of the River Dogs.
Jose Leger stayed with his funky right-hander for the 8th and Atkins
rewarded his Manager with another scoreless frame. In total, Atkins finished
with four strikeouts as he lowered his ERA to 0.66. He’s at 26 K: 5 BB in 27.1
IP for the Fireflies (103 batter’s faced), with just 20 hits allowed for a .502
OPS against.
Cola
closer Matt Pobereyko came out for his third save opportunity in the 9th
and he was able to convert for a second time, although not without some drama.
Dermis Garcia showed why he’s such a highly regarded when he took Pobereyko
deep to center and off the batter’s eye. Pobereyko struck out two in the frame
but the second reached on a wild pitch – that’s the fourth time in the last two
games between these two teams. The River Dogs were able to get that runner
around to make it a one-run game, but then Pobereyko shut the door for a Cola
win.
Looking
ahead, the Fireflies go for the series win Wednesday night behind Justin
Brantley (0-0, 4.70 ERA), with game time scheduled for 7:05 PM.
